I'm going to be getting new irons within the next month. I currently play Titleist 690 CBs I bought in the early 2000s so it's been a while. I'm a 41 year old with an 8 handicap. 7 iron distance is 165. Not sure of swing speed.

I am willing to spend up to $1,500 on some new irons and will be getting a fitting session scheduled to try some out. I want to make sure the ones I buy fit me the best, but don't want to take up a ton of the fitting guy's time by trying every iron on the market. I'm just wondering what some of your experiences or recommendations would be. I want them to be players irons, but not blades, and still have forgiveness as I plan on having them for a while.

Some I've seen good things about are Mizunos, Callaway Mavriks, not sure what Titleist has out there and Taylor Mades.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Wouldn't the fitter be the best person to ask about what irons to get, though?

If you want to try every iron on the market, I'm sure he could set you up with some demos if he doesn't have enough time. But you're paying for his time, so he'll probably be more than happy to help.

It would be best to narrow the field down by what suits your eye prior to the fitting. Maybe go in with 3 clubs you want to test. However, explain to the fitter that you are open to any recommendations they have. Thus, give them an idea to start with, but be open to changing your mind.

Not that I buy a ton of irons but I have to like the way it looks at address. I like a really thin top line. So I would go to the store and just put the clubs down and see what they look like. That would eliminate a couple I was looking at online that I thought I could be interested in.

Other than that. Let the fitter do his job like others mentioned.

Just played the Maveriks while I was in Colorado last week and I am almost certain these will be my next irons. With your handicap you should probably look at the Pros or Max.
