The rain knocked my electric bill to one third of normal rate.

you stay off of social media and don’t watch the news, the “real life” that I live currently is pretty good. The only difference for me is that I have to wear a mask a couple hours a week at most (church and grocery stores), and a couple of my friends don’t want to hang out because they are “social distancing”.

Now, I just wish the damn rain would give me a break, because I’d like to hang out in my pool a little more.

It’s about 3 hours west of you, buddy.

I moved to Texas a few years ago and literally ever facet of my life has gotten better.

Jobs are better
People are nicer
Infrastructure is better
Weather is nicer (doesn’t rain all of the time)
Less crime to worry about
More activities to do in the city

This is dependent upon your field. For example, it would be no different for my wife and I.

Not if you live in a city. And, if you live in a suburb, your quality of life will decrease because you'll be in a damn vehicle all the time.

Of everything you listed, I never worry about crime in Louisiana. It is so focused in small areas of the state. If you are not into illegal activities I doubt crime is affecting you any more than any other state.

Absolutely this.

No one is debating that JBE isn't garbage, but LA has been so awful WAY before he was in office.

Buddy, this is all subjective. I'm telling you my experience. If you want to live in Louisiana your entire life that's great. I found it to be lacking in many areas, so I moved.

I'll address your points, however, like I said this was my experience so I expect you to not agree and that's fine. At the end of the day I'm enjoying my life much better and you're happy in Louisiana.

quote:

Jobs are better: This is dependent upon your field. For example, it would be no different for my wife and I.

Totally, I'm in marketing for a tech company. I was working in marketing at one of the few eCommerce companies in Baton Rouge. When I was no longer happy there, my opportunities were limited to find more work in BR. I expanded my search to Texas (Austin) and suddenly hundreds of jobs were available. I got hired at a much better company making more than double what I was in BR.

quote:

People are nicer: This is subjective.

Sure, but in my experience, the people I interact with on a daily basis are polite. The grocery store clerks, retail workers, food service cashiers, public at large. I can't remember the last time I saw a trashy or ghetto person out in public. Quick anecdote, the week I moved here I went to HEB to grab some beer to drink while unpacking, and the cashier says "Hey, good morning, how are you doing today?" Me:"good". Cashier:"Got a big day planned?" I thought this guy was fricking with me and being overly nice to be a dick, come to find out that's just how people are around here. Every time I pick up fast food for the wife it's the same experience as if you're at Raising Canes or Chic-fil-a. In BR you pull up and they say through the speaker "gohead", where as here they say "Hi welcome to ___, how can I help you today?".

quote:

Infrastructure is better: While true, it doesn't affect my life a whole lot.

That's fine. I drive often (pre-pandemic) so it does affect mine a whole lot. Streets are clean and well maintained with no potholes. There are 3 different interstates I can choose to take to get to work (including an 80 MPH toll road). I actually drive further to work but get there faster than I did in BR. I find myself in less traffic actually. More people on the road but it never comes to a full stop.

quote:

Weather is nicer (doesn’t rain all of the time): It's basically the same weather.

You're plainly wrong on this one.

Baton Rouge, Louisiana gets 63 inches of rain, on average, per year.

Austin, Texas gets 35 inches of rain, on average, per year.

The US average is 38 inches of rain per year.

quote:

Less crime to worry about: Not if you live in a city. And, if you live in a suburb, your quality of life will decrease because you'll be in a damn vehicle all the time.

Crime is ranked on a scale of 1 (low crime) to 100 (high crime)

Baton Rouge violent crime is 47.2. (The US average is 22.7)
Baton Rouge property crime is 66.4. (The US average is 35.4)

Austin violent crime is 24.9. (The US average is 22.7)
Austin property crime is 55.0. (The US average is 35.4)

More activities to do in the city: Such as?

I love going to breweries with my wife, and while I lived in Baton Rouge there was only Tin Roof available, now in Austin there over 58 breweries near me. I haven't visited them all yet, but I'm working through them.

On hot summer days we love renting a boat and spending some time in Lake Travis, or up at the Oasis Brewing Co overlooking Lake Travis. You could always visit the natural pool at Barton Springs if that's more your thing.

There are so many bars and restaurants downtown that I actually feel safe walking around to at night, although it pales in comparison to the vivacious paradise of 3rd street in BR.

I'm loving your interest in my new city, if you'd like to learn more things to do, be sure to check out our Trip Advisor page and enjoy your stay!

My parents left BR and are downtown in Austin now and couldn’t be happier. This adds nothing to the conversation but I’m bored and felt like checking in.

Some serious bullshite in here! I have an apartment in Houston at City Center. The crime is much worse there, and all around Houston, than in New Orleans. I'm sure the crime statistics are worse in NOLA, but it's criminals killing criminals. It rarely hits middle class folks. If you park a car anywhere around Houston, and you have a laptop in it, it will be gone when you come back at least a third of the time.

The weather is NOT nicer. It's regularly over 100 degrees during the summer in Houston - not as humid, but still humid! The LSU game at Austin last year was the hottest I've ever been, even after the game.

I guess if you take all of Houston there are more activities, but it will take an hour to drive to them. If you include an hour drive from NOLA you encompass the Gulf Coast and baton Rouge.

People are not nicer, although they are nice enough.

Infrastructure is better? I guess. They flood at the drop of a hat, and traffic is horrendous - way worse than in NOLA.

Jobs are definitely better. Not even close.

Houston sounds like a shite hole. I live in Austin and my experience is nothing like yours.

Yes it's hot here. I like that. I was at that game too and had a great time, it was indeed hot and bright and sunny. I hate the rain, which is what I called out in my post.

Crime affects everyone in New Orleans. There may be rampant property crime in Houston but people aren’t getting mugged in broad daylight or carjacked like NOLA.

And Houston activities are only far if you live outside of the loop. I can be anywhere within the loop (where activities are) within 15-20 minutes.

Houston sucks. It’s like expanding New Orleans but trading culture and identity for concrete and good jobs.
