Three of mine just off the top of my head:
1) Pink Floyd - Time - Song that has arguably the greatest, most jarring lyrics ever about life being short and life passing you by. Just read the lyrics while listening to the song and if they don't hit you like a ton of bricks nothing will..."And then one day you find...ten years have got behind you...no one told you when to run...you missed the starting gun"
2) Harry Chapin - Cat's in the Cradle - heartbreaking classic about a father too caught up in the rat race of life to truly appreciate his son growing up and then his son barely having the time for him when he's old and retired and most needs it.
3) Mike and the Mechanics - The Living Years - Song about a son and father who held on to a grudge against one another and his father dying before he could reconcile with him and tell him how much he loved him.

mission in the rain- hunter/garcia
Ten years ago, I walked this street my dreams were riding tall
Tonight I would be thankful Lord, for any dream at all.
Some folks would be happy just to have one dream come true
But everything you gather is just more that you can lose.
All the things I planned to do I only did half way
Tomorrow will be Sunday born of rainy Saturday.

Andy Grammer - 85
Song is talking about growing to age 85 and not enjoying life experiences but too worried about money.
New Found Glory - 20 Years From Now
Song about how 20 years can pass and how you can lose out on important moments and win stupid arguments that end up being meaningless in the long run.
This thread has the potential.

"We had it all" the Waylon version from Honkytonk Heroes.
We had it all Waylon Jennings
The Stones had a version of it that was good too. Also the song, "Honkytonk Heroes" from the same Waylon ablum, written by Billy Joe Shaver, is another incredible song that I always took to be about regretting a life full of bad choices.

Most of the songs on that album are regret songs.
These are not tears, just smoke in my eyes.
Smoke from the bridges I'm burning tonight. - from
Long Day Coming

NFG reminded me of one of my favorites from LTJ which also seems to fit the criteria.

Willie Nelson - Always on my Mind
It's a song from my childhood, but when I grew up and really listened to the lyrics, it was about the time a girl had just broken up with me. I wasn't sure if it was something I did or if we'd just grown apart. Just hit home in thinking back and evaluating if I could have done more.
quote:
Tell me
Tell me that your sweet love hasn't died
And give me
Give me one more chance to keep you satisfied
I'll keep you satisfied
Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time
You were always on my mind (you were always on my mind)
You were always on my mind
