You come at my car with an AK in an aggressive posture(nevermind the crowd surrounding the car beating on it), you just blew your free warning shot. Doubly true if I have people I care about with me.
No disagreement here. I usually have my 40 in the car, but I made sure to right after all the major stuff across the country started happening. Luckily this seemingly justified shooting is the worst thing to happen here so it’s been pretty good. Considering there was an actual awful police shooting here before the George Floyd stuff, the city has done really well.

He didn't try to "run over" anyone. He tried to drive his vehicle on a public road. What the hell was he supposed to do, teleport?
Another dead dumbass. Don't make excuses for him.

But I think the practical and legal reality is that if you carry an AR or an AK in public, and you get into a tight spot or conflict, it's not unreasonable that someone may have a strong case against you for self defense, even where you (AR/AK carrier) aren't intending to pose a threat.
And while the protests/riots context should matter, right wing protestors and random idiots who want to exercise their rights by taking an AR into Starbucks should remember this is a gamble they're taking too.
If the dude just casually walked over to the car with the gun loose in the sling, one thing. If he walked over to the car with the gun up and used it to motion him to roll down his window while pointing it in the car and other beat the car? Justified shooting.

If you think it's safe to walk around pointing a rifle at cars while other people are attacking the cars, then you are a prime candidate for a Darwin award.
Let's give the guy the medal and move on here.

edit: I forgot about the person who shot at the car as it drove away. he should be charged with attempted murder
Yeah not sure how that guy got released too. What he did was worse than what the dead guy did imo.

This is the reality and it's a close call and something gun advocates should talk about.
On one hand, I support people I disagree with politically exercising their 2A rights. I think we have to do so and do so publicly.
I think it all hinges on one particular detail:
Is the protest or demonstration a "Legal" protest or demonstration? If those "protesters" were blocking the roadway and not allowing people to travel on that roadway without a permit, it is an illegal protest. Armed individuals at an illegal protest are committing multiple crimes.

Agreed, but the reasonable person standard is going to become less predictable when the person who is killed is wearing a tac vest and carrying an AK.
That's just the reality. And while I (like most 2A people) hate it when media and lefties cry about scary looking weapons, it's hard to disagree with the notion in some circumstances.
I'm about as pro-2A as they come, but if 3 douchey looking kids in all black come into McDonalds with ARs while my kid with me, I'm certainly going to be apprehensive to some extent. I'd probably guess that they're "on my side" but we're living in bizarre times.
In short - your margin for error is less in these situations, regardless of your intentions.

He only broke Texas law, as far as the firearm is concerned, when he brandished it.
The driver as well as the 2nd shooter who shot at the car as it was driving off, both had CHL permits, though the latter will probably lose his.

Also, what happened in Austin did not happen in a vaccum. It is a fair assumption that the guy has been following the news of late, both local and national, and knew good and well the chances of something very bad happening to him if that crowd got him out of the car.

I don’t think these agitators realize that people have been pushed about as far as they will go. At some point, the ones being pushed are going to push back and it will be bad for this little angry minority that thinks Twitter posts and Tik Tok give them power. Real life is going to smack them in the face like a freight train.
