The untold human cost of COVID19
Posted on 7/17/20 at 2:59 pm
Posted on 7/17/20 at 2:59 pm
I’m a “front line” healthcare worker.
I work in an ER in a metro. I’m present at cardiac arrest codes, intubations, and everything else that goes along with working in an ER.
It’s what I signed up for. I love being at the front and using my skills and knowledge to their utmost maximum.
After months of COVID, I’m fatigued. It’s not like the work is too hard; I’m very good at what I do and love it. However, it bleeds into normal everyday life and impacts what is supposed to be “downtime” so I can revitalize my mind and spirit.
My parents are old. Like, >20% mortality from COVID old. I’m terrified I will catch the virus and spread it to them unknowingly and kill them. They are still sharp and have at least 10 years in them each, but I love them terribly and want as much time as possible.
I have restricted my interaction with them since March. I haven’t hugged my Korean War vet USMC father since then out of fear I’ll give him the virus. He is old and o don’t know how many more opportunities I will get to hug him and I have sacrificed some portion of the few I have left.
I feel like a foot soldier on a battlefield with a large enemy sniper presence. You just know you’re going to get hit, you just don’t know when or where. Except it doesn’t kill me, it kills people I care about.
We used football as the one thing we can still enjoy together. We are season ticket holders to our favorite team and seeing the joy that his face when we would win and have that experience together meant the world. But that’s being robbed from us.
Yeah, I know, dear Facebook. But I wanted to add some depth to all this. Thanks for reading.

You should be on NPR

I’m fatigued and broken for you.
Your story is one of the reasons Houston is talking about shutting down for a couple of weeks—to give the frontliners a reprieve.
Those folks are simply gassed.
Thank you for all you’ve done.
Hang in there and know that many of us appreciate what you’re doing.

I’ll choose to take this as a compliment.

It’s just exasperating.
I’ve actually made the first error I’ve made in the last 5 years because of how mentally drained I am.
For all the people downvoting for political reasons (which is really fricking sad), I don’t support any shutdowns. I want life to go on as normal and rip the band aid off. The wait is worse than the result.

Thank you for all you've doneare doing and for your info and insight in the OT coronavirus thread.
I've stayed away from there for the most part because just dealing with that is taxing mentally and makes you feel like the whole world is a bleak disaster waiting to unfold. And I can barely imagine how much more difficult it is for you.
It's stuff like this that makes me mask up when I go someplace if only so it can make things easier on those who have to deal with it EVERY day. I mainly read and worry a bit; I don't have to face it constantly.
Hopefully this can stop soon enough (through vaccine, people taking precautions, herd immunity, etc) where you can spend more time with your parents.
I hope this helps you feel a little better.

No this is literally what you signed up for. Did you not know new viruses can happen at anytime when you chose this field? Your complaint is as valid as people joining the military during wartime and complaining they get deployed

Can we reach herd/vaccination immunity or will there be reinfections?
Posted on 7/17/20 at 3:21 pm to Tiguar
This is something a nurse would say
Posted on 7/17/20 at 3:22 pm to Diseasefreeforall
Personally I think we can reach herd immunity. Antibodies seem to last 3m but your T cells probably remember and will make the infection less severe.
Reports of people getting reinfected and dying are dubious.

That isn’t why Houston wants to shut down
Posted on 7/17/20 at 3:22 pm to Tiguar
Yeah it's not untold. We are all dealing with the same thing. I haven't seen my mom, dad or step-dad in over 4 months.
Posted on 7/17/20 at 3:23 pm to td01241
And you know what, I’ll take it a step further. I don’t get the lifetime gibs me dats that comes along with soldiers who actually go to war. So again, eat a black dick

No one is talking about this, though. If people did, I sense the desire to get this over with as quickly as possible would take center stage.

At this stage, the lock-down cure is much worse than the disease for everyone who is not >65 and with two or more comorbidities.

I don't doubt the sincerity of your OP or you yourself but I do want to remind you it was the left wing that politicized the virus and are trying to use it for political gain, not the conservatives on this board

I get it... you guys are overworked and exhausted. I really do appreciate what y’all do.. but stuff like this is why medical personnel get a bad rap on here. There are other people who are going to work and taking the same risks you do.

How does knowing it was possibly give you a free pass to complain about the possibility coming to pass? The military analogy is perfect
