This is why I might not come back from New Zealand. I don’t have to worry about any of that shite over here.

Thank you for what you are doing
My fiancé is on the front lines in the Atlanta area.
She says they have never been short on PPE and the hospital beds haven’t been full. She is in the ICU. Cardiovascular stuff is her specialty.
She says 9 out of 10 people she has seen on vents or die are morbidly obese and African American
She has seen many of her friends furloughed because the hospitals aren’t as busy.
She has never complained as she says this is what she has signed up for.
She tells me all the time that this isn’t TB or Ebola, which are the things she really fears.
Tells me to wash my hands, keep my distance from people.
Her opinion is that this is so overblown and that so many people on the frontline love attention of social media.
Just sharing what she thinks from the frontlines

While that is one aspect of the untold human cost, there is also the untold cost because kids are not being fed or cared for by crappy parents and are slipping through the cracks on a daily basis.

There is also a very real, very measurable uptick in suicides. There is an article out of Australia that projects the Australian deaths due to suicide during this outbreak is projected to exceed the CV-19 heaths by a tenfold margin.

LINK

I am not saying what you are facing with your parents is not real and a cost, but just pointing out some people are paying a way higher cost all for what exactly?

How much of your case load is related directly to Covid-19? I ask out of serious curiosity. We hear all the drum beat about ICUs being overwhelmed in Houston, but then when I dig in the data I see 30%-40% of the ICU beds are Covid occupied beds and the rest are "normal" ICU stuff. I am wondering what the ER percentages look like.

Well just to set the record straight. I read today that AZ is around 80 to 90 percent full on ICU beds. Then, a couple hours ago, our governor (NM) announced Arizona is now bringing some of their covid patients to New Mexico for them to recover here. This is because they are almost full and apparently there is some law or regulation that requires neighboring states to help with patient load during when needed and possible. Now, the whole state is even more pissed at Arizona than they usually are. What's next, we gotta start wiping Texas' dirty arse next week too? Point is, Arizona is stating they are not full, close, but not full... And we are STILL alleviating their patient load throughout our entire state. And we are half their damn size!

No this is literally what you signed up for. Did you not know new viruses can happen at anytime when you chose this field? Your complaint is as valid as people joining the military during wartime and complaining they get deployed

He literally said in the OP that this is what he signed up for and that he loves using his skills to help. Even when people have careers and jobs that they signed up for and love, it doesn’t mean that they can’t get worn down and feel the need to vent a little.

Some of you are so wrapped up in COVID-19 politics and conspiracies that any discussion about COVID-19 is fake news.

I hear choppers airlifting patients into UNM hospital every couple hours. They've been escalating as Arizona has reported more cases and deaths over the past few days. The Governor said she's bringing them here because they need help. This is only happening because Governor Duncey of AZ won't grow some balls, stand up to his cult leader, and require Arizonans to wear masks. Some leaders need to realize that standing up to the cult leader is what really defines courage. Please wear a mask. Everyone.

Look Op, I work in the medical field. Psychiatry so it’s not the same as you but I’m seeing the effects on people too. It stresses me out. I just don’t feel I can freely and openly complain about it because again, I chose this field.

If I choose to go outside, I know it is possible that I will get stung by a wasp. So by your logic, if I get stung, I would not be able to complain about being stung or express the pain because I knew I could get stung outside and I chose to go outside anyway.

Ok. I will say this even though it’s not politically correct. I have 2 friends that work in health care industry in Arizona. Yes their beds are filling up and yes their deaths are rising.
However, from what they tell me it’s from the extremely unhealthy Navajo population out there, this is already extremely unhealthy.

All of metro-Phoenix, Metro- Tucson and every other city/town in Arizona fighting the virus has a mask mandate. Ducey didn’t make it statewide because there are parts of the state that don’t need a mandate.

That we’ve had a mask mandate for several weeks now and it hasn’t had an impact on case counts suggests masks, as is consistent with the science on masks, don’t do much in stopping the spread of COVID.

You mentioned that masks work in New Mexico, but I thought NM has seen a doubling of confirmed cases in the last few weeks? Is that not true?

I'm a doctor treating cancer in a community setting. I'm in the hospital every day seeing patients. Never slowed down treating cancer patients throughout this time. Haven't lost one patient to the virus. My mother is old. She has ckd, parkinsons, htn, diabetes and obesity. I see her and hug her every week. Live your life. If they're meant to die of rona you're probably not going to stop it.

The Navajo nation stretches between AZ, UT, and NM. In March or April, in the beginning of the Wu Flu spread, the Navajo nation was struggling hard. Very true. They live in homes of 12 to 15 people stretching over four generations, perhaps five. Many of these homes have no running water and no electricity (the water in the area is too polluted from the uranium mines needed for WW2). So, they have no water, no power, and all live together. They were the problem at first. They were over half the cases in New Mexico everyday for weeks. The New Mexico side of the reservation was getting over 150 cases plus daily in the beginning. They did 57 hour weekend curfews and squashed it. Not anymore though. For the past 5 or 6 weeks they've only been getting 40-60 cases per day. They've almost completely put it down. No longer a hot spot.

Again, this is only the New Mexico side though. Which is like 1/4 to 1/3 of the rez.

P.S. If the federal government had kept their promise to clean up the old uranium mines the Navajo could have clean well water on the inherited rez they were forced to migrate to. But this prolly ain't the place for that converstaion.

Love the place. Used to spend time at Sandia and Los Alamos, at the top of the mountain above Santa Fe.

But, there used to be a little hot dog place, west of town. Called "The Hound Dog", maybe? I forget. But, the sauce was just the right spice.

And as I type this, I realize I sound like I am using Pedo code. But, in this case, I promise, I really did make it a point of always going there.

Any chance your familiar with the place??

This is what I’m trying to do but I don’t want to be the vector. I don’t know if I could live with myself knowing I basically killed my parents.

Yeah, the counties close to Texas have been pulling ridiculous numbers. Like 8% to 20% plus positives daily. Those dairy cow counties are more Texan than New Mexican. We don't need a mask everywhere in New Mexico either obviously. Some guy on CNBC just said new research shows mask usage goes up 15 to 18 percent when the governor requires it. Why? Because people like and want to be good citizens. Everyone on this board prides themselves on that

Basically, SE New Mexico thinks and acts West Texan. Texas thinks they're too tough for the Wu Flu.

BTW, even though our Gov. required masks doesn't mean everyone has them on at all times. She's being reasonable about it. You can stand on the sidewalk without a mask on but when you hop on the bus you better mask up.
