Why is tea considered English, Curry is still foreign/imported, but both come from India?

Both also appeared at around the same time in England, yet no one would say hot tea isn't distinctly English. The same is not true of curried chicken.

yeah yeah, dear facebook, but it has me puzzled.

Tea is from China. The British We’re the first to turn it into a plantation crop and started growing it in India to avoid paying the Chinese for it. Though it’s not grown in the British Isles they really created the market.

They eat curry in England. I thought that chicken curry has replaced fish n chips in terms of popularity. FWIW, I have never had chicken curry worth a shite. I always hear, “but you have never had good chicken curry!”

That statement is still true. frick that nasty shite.

You do realize that tea, like anything else, is not based on just where countries exist now.

NE India and SW China both have natural tea crops.

What the British did on a political/economic basis is a different story.

Because the British controlled the tea trade for centuries. And I think most people associate tea with the East more than the Brits these days.

I’ve rarely had bad chicken curry. One of my favorite dishes.

Probably for the same reason that tomatoes are associated with Italian culture even though they’re from the New World.

What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?

The other thing is that tea (and coffee and chocolate) exploded in popularity across Europe in the 17th & 18th centuries, when they were combined with plentiful, cheap sugar from British colonies like Barbados and Jamaica.

I have never had great chicken curry, but I’ve decent chicken curry. If anyone has a good recommendation around BR, I’ll try it. I’ve had the curry at Thai Pepper and India’s and neither were particularly noteworthy.

Those aren't really quality restaurants. In fact, my experience at India's was downright bad.
