Why Florida State, Seminole Tribe stand behind the Seminoles nickname

quote:

“Florida State University’s official use of the Seminole name is different from other names in that it does not perpetuate offensive racial stereotypes nor is it meant to diminish or trivialize any Native American or indigenous peoples. Instead, it is used with explicit tribal permission and involvement to honor and promote the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s unconquered history and spirit that persists to this day.”

That'll never change. The Seminole Tribe has fully supported FSU and they have a working relationship with them.

The Seminole tribe has openly said they have no issue with FSU using the name. From a historical perspective, it makes sense. LINK

If that's what everyone else was doing, then they are absolutely diminishing and trivializing.

Why do some people think that redskin and Seminole are comparable in terms of political correctness?

Just because they’re both terms that refer to Native Americans, it doesn’t mean they’re the same level of insensitivity at all.

FSU has the support of the Seminole tribe, so they aren't changing it.

Plus, Seminole is the actual name of the tribe, so the word itself is not likely to be offensive.

Guess you missed this part:

I don't think I've ever heard of the Redskin tribe.

How often do you think about Indians? Or native Americans?

I hardly ever do. Except when I see the Redskins or Indians or Braves or Chiefs or whoever else plays

So once all the Indian names are gone from sports teams then they will slowly but surely be all but forgotten

No one has called an Indian a redskin as a derogatory term in 200 years if ever, at least not in the same way other races have been called a derogatory term based on their skin color

And I guarantee you barely anybody at all knew redskin was supposed to be a derogatory term until about 5 years ago

I've seen absolutely zero talk of the FSU name during this, so yeah it kind of does.

No need to make fake arguments/outrages.

So a white dude riding out on a horse dressed as a Seminole and carrying a war spear isn't offensive just because the Seminoles say so? If that's not offensive Redskin shouldnt be either.

I asked the same thing about Dixie beer.

Did Benson not publicly abandon the copyright/trademark to that name and design?
