It was ok
Very little character development

Can you imagine 50 straight hours of trying to find u boats with no sleep or break while protecting convoys and making decisions without much intel

I had, maybe, 2 seconds of screen time,

But they were a pivotal and important 2 seconds. At least that is how you should spin it.

It’s a part of ww2 I had no clue going into
Decent watch
The music score was annoying entire movie
It’s not saving private Ryan or band of brothers but for $50 million budget it’s worth a watch

I don't know if anyone here will get it, but the little toy destroyer that his girlfriend gave to him in San Francisco...
had a K number on it, not a DD like it should have...
anyone else ever seen Corvette K-225 with Randolph Scott?
the movie was decent enough, lots of tension, but it simply told a story through the eyes of the destroyer captain...
I imagine a decent amount of this was filmed in Baton Rouge on the Kidd...since this destroyer was a 5 gun Fletcher class

Not much character development, but I enjoyed the film. Tom Hanks was awesome as usual. I came away with tremendous respect for everyone involved with getting troops and supplies to Europe.
As far as production - I think the interior bridge shots from the Greyhound were on the USS Kidd (Fletcher Class Destroyer moored in the Baton Rouge harbor, now a museum ship), while the hotel lobby was the Louisiana State Capital building. The Christmas Tree was covering the Louisiana state seal.
Obviously the stakes were much higher for Destroyer captains and sailors than what most will ever have to deal with....but it’s still a good lesson in leadership and in life - sometimes we have to be comfortable making difficult decisions based limited context or bad information.

I thought it was fine. Worth watching but not something I’d watch again. I couldn’t help but think about how the entire movie is basically cgi. Then I kept thinking about how difficult it must be to be an actor in that situation.

I thought they filmed the interior scenes on the USS Kidd?
Anyway, I enjoyed it but it felt rushed.

I would agree with you. It just straight into the action and didn’t relent from 5 mins in to the end.
Character development lacking, which I didn’t mind, it does a great job showing how harrowing it was being in the Navy in WW2 in the North Atlantic.
It reinforced my stance that being in the navy during WW2 would be my least favorite branch. U boats in the middle of the night hunting you and potentially sending you to your grave in 20000 ft of water without ever seeing them? Not thanks. I’d rather charge an MG 42 nest head on, at least I’d see my enemy and die on dry earth. All my respect to those heroes.
Tom Hanks was good, even if he is a pedo.

That is good to hear.
Many movies that are based on a great story/concept are ruined when they waste time trying to get us to know and care for the characters.

I agree, I don't need character development for a movie like this. They're Navy sailors, probably have a wife and kids at home, and just want to complete their mission and get back safe. Just put me in the situation and show me the tension, stress, and courage associated with it.
Worth the watch. It was entertaining, effectively used its runtime, and showed a side of the war that doesn't get much coverage in film.

watched it twice. Second time gave me a greater appreciation for the captain's faith and how he drew upon it throughout the ordeal.
It's a good military popcorn flick. Pretty accurate as well. Special effects were high quality, you rarely thought they were acting in front of a modified green screen.
It isn't a top 5 WWII movie but certainly has my respect as a quality addition to the genre

I thought these comments summed it up ...

“It’s a part of ww2 I had no clue going into ”
“It’s not saving private Ryan ”
“told a story through the eyes of the destroyer captain... ”

If you want to read a very accurate book about the war in the North Atlantic, read the following. The author was there in the thick of it.
