What a great achievement!!

Definitely not what I was thinking when I was 12 years old
Kudos to this lil champ.....$40 price point is perfect and this will surely save lives.

Lydia Denton might be young, but that's not stopping her from saving lives and making an impact in the world.
The 12-year-old girl from North Carolina was recently named the winner of CITGO's Fueling Education Student Challenge, where she earned $20,000 after creating the winning invention of a car seat device that detects when babies have been left in a hot car and can prevent them from dying.
quote:
"What I wanted was a device that had the ability to get 911 there to save the baby if a parent didn't respond," she shares. "I also wanted something everyone could afford."
A current student at a Title 1 school, Lydia notes that while most "new cars come with warnings and smart car seats," many of her friends and family "don't have hundreds of dollars to buy a new car or a very expensive car seat."
quote:
"Also, babies grow!" she adds. "I wanted it to be a portable thing that you could move from one car seat to the next and keep using."
After much thought, Lydia created the first prototype of her invention, Beat The Heat Car Seat. The device works through a pressure pad under the car seat cover, which can sense weight over 5 lbs. When a baby is in the seat, the system starts itself up and monitors the temperature.
If the temperature reaches above 102 degrees, the seat will set off an alarm along with a warning on the LCD display. A text will also be sent to the parent's phone. If the parent does not reset the button within 60 seconds, a message is sent to 911 with the built-in GPS chip, called an Arduino, sending the car's location to emergency services.

I put a watermelon in the car seat so it wouldn’t roll around and it called 911 and the cops came and shot out my window

Let's see at 12 I was thinking about boobies.

Black families can’t afford it. #racist

At 40 I’m still thinking of boobies

I've actually thought about this before. Her idea is great, but I don't know that many people will buy it simply because most people think to themselves "something like that would never happen to me."
The true money comes if you can integrate something like this into new car designs and then get laws passed requiring your device be included in all new cars.

Is it wrong that I thought of little Muhammad's clock when I saw that picture?

Brilliant. Simple and brilliant.

So she doesn’t get ownership of the design? Wtf

Good idea, but I see a lot of people throwing groceries in the car, forgetting about the sensor and it alerting 911. (I throw shite in my 3 yo car seat all the time if shes not riding with me)
How many false alarm messages does 911 get before they don’t even take it seriously?

Clearly needs an internet connection..... 40 bucks + monthly cost

She better hurry up and slap a patent on that

You are absolutely right. This idea will be integrated into car seats and vehicles in the future. It's a great idea and will be cheap to do on a mass scale. Car seats area already $$$ I'd pay extra for this.

We got black people advocating to buy black children 3 to 18 bullet proof vests and helmets to protect them from black on black crime.

Have you seen the amount of unnecessary shite new parents buy these days? It's insane. If 40 bucks prevents a one in a million or more chance, there are plenty who will buy it.
