This was true until the country hit critical mass with population and number of jobs.
At that point then immigration remains helpful if targeted in the areas where you need people to fill jobs and where the immigrants become self sufficient.
You have people putting into a pot and people taking from the pot. When the amount being taken from the pot exceeds the amount going in the pot you have a problem. The answer is not for the payers to pay more. The answer is to look at the takers and figure out to turn more of those into payers.
