How did you improve your putting?

Looking for good putting tips, what did you figure out or start to think about that put you over the edge?
Posted on 6/28/20 at 9:30 pm to Tiger1242
What kind of putter? What kind of putting stroke?

Buy a mirror and practice

Practice putting by practicing. Most people will spend hours upon hours at the driving range practicing the long game when the short game can make up 2/3 of your round. I practice at home with a 10’ perfect practice mat and a mirror. Indoor practice is not perfect but it will help you get down a consistent grip and stroke and will quickly point out if you have any tendencies.

That’s what I do. Have the perfect putt ramp thing. Putt a little every day.
How does the mirror work?

It’s nothing special it’s just kind of helps build a routine knowing exactly where your eyes are every time

I watch Mike Malaska videos.
I am a terrible putte. I also switched to a putter with no lines and that’s helped me tremendously

Get a metronome app on your phone. Learn to make your stroke in the exact amount of time regardless of length. Start on the first tone, transition to through putt on the second tone, and complete on the 3rd tone. Then you vary the length of your stroke based on length of putt. Do that and you'll almost never 3 putt.

Buy a putt out mat and the putt out return thing. Honestly, you can really buy anything for putting at home, as long as it is good quality. Just don't get something cheap.
And just putt. I would put the kids to bed and putt for 15 minutes or so. When I'm doing that, I'm hitting putts well and getting a feel for pace. It also makes 3-4 footers more manageable on the course.

A putting arc, and practice, lots and lots of practice.
Then practice some more.
Make 50 4-footers a day. Try counting how many putts it takes you to make 50 and work on beating that number.
I also loved the drill, gotta make 2 straight from 3 feet before moving to 6 feet where you have to make 2 in a row before moving to 9 feet where you make 2 in a row to be done. If you miss at any point you start over again at 3 feet. Basically you have to make 6 straight putts to be done.

Put something small like a dime about a foot in front of your ball on the target line and practice rolling the ball over that intermediate target. In an actual round, find a grain of sand or a blade of grass to use as an intermediate target and roll your ball over that. This will clear up most clubface and path issues.

Thatd good practice, but you better have time on your hands because the make percentage of all those in a row for a pro is like 10% or less

The biggest help is practice often. Putting mat or green. Daily helps. Just keep rolling the ball.

Practice. New putter won’t solve it

Also match your putter to your swing arc. I went from a face balanced putter to one with very minimal toe hang and it made a difference in the way the putter opens and closes. More straight back is better for a face balanced putter, more arc is better for a toe hang putter. There are also some that fall in between.

There’s a ton of good advice on here. Some advice that will absolutely confuse you and make you an even worse putter. Putting is a very simple art that people complicate the hell out of. The less you think about the better you are. Reading the greens is the hardest aspect of putting. To get back to the simplicity.
1. Find your line
2. Pick a spot 6-12” in front of the ball to line up to
3. Grip and grip pressure is next but watch some videos of this and it will be second nature to you once you know what it feels like.
4. Narrow stance for me and i make sure i stock my elbows into my “ribs. Allowing my hands to hang freely below.
5. Rock your shoulders. There should be little hand involved in your putting. Like minuscule.
What I’ve written may seem complicated but once you get the process is very simple. Alignment, pick your spot, grip pressure, elbows in, and rock your shoulders.

practice the hell out of lag putts of 30 feet or more.
practice it so much that you can almost lag one to within 4 feet from 30 feet evrey time.
practice 4 foot putts constantly. Almost to where you can make 20 in a row.
when you can become a great lag putter and you can make 4 footers with your eyes closed you will become a great putter.
lag putting is huge.
also it probably helps to get fit with a putter but I haven't gone through that process.

Check out an indoor training aid called Delta Putt. There are some YouTube videos that demonstrate how it works. You are basically hitting a triangular puck, with three different levels of difficulty, to work on your face angle at impact. Once you try the “pro” level, you will quickly realize you have work to do!
Nothing beats outdoor practice on a real green, but the Delta Putt is a simple indoor trainer that requires very little space.

I know it’s not the putter, it’s the puttee, but I purchased my first nice putter and it has improved my confidence. I think it’s all about confidence. In the process of scheduling a radio frequency ablation to dull my chronic back pain. I plan to practice much more soon, hopefully. I would also like to get a synthetic putting green in the backyard.

The RFA will help the game more than a putting green lol.
