When I moved to Trinidad, about a month afterwards I arrived at work and commented that traffic was as space as a holiday. The reason, school holiday..

Trinidadians take a standardized test and list their three three choices. These can be anywhere in the country, the resulting traffic resembles exiting Talledega.

We can't have school choice because it will make traffic worse.

Is that what this post is about?

Lots of areas like that.

It could be dealt with if people wanted to fix bad schools but a lot of administrations don’t want to do that and just cycle through shitty kids instead.

so we should hold back kids and take away any advantage of a good school because of traffic. By that logic everyone should go to their local community college instead of a school that sets them up for success.

Parents should be able to send their kid to the best school for them and to schools that will focus on their strengths and what they want to do in the future. This way they have every advantage possible to succeed.

Pray-tell....how do you "fix" shitty schools?

I've heard this same shite my entire life and I am not young.

Dems can't allow school choice because it would break their holds on the teacher unions. What do you do with all those teachers and administrators of failing innercity schools when there are no kids that are going there?

Kind of starts by forcing teachers to teach and the school administration to hold kids to standards.

The thread the other days has talked about kids being little hooligans and threatening to stab teachers who don’t offer extra credit. The administration said “give them the option.”

Point is that shitty kids STAY shitty kids if you don’t hold them to any standards and help bring down everyone else in the process.

Open enrollment has already done that in many areas.

The main question to ponder with school choice is this:

Will it get kids better educations, or will it make good schools worse?

My wife is a teacher and the biggest problem you have nowadays is that they expect teachers to be teachers/administrators/babysitters all at the same time. There is so much administrative bullshite that teachers have to do that they don't have adequate time to just teach.

Putting crappy students into good schools doesn't make them better students. Bringing kids distracted by the conduct of bad students into good schools does create a good student.

There are good kids in bad schools, but the bad schools are due to the lack of structure, support, and accountability at home of majority of the kids there. No amount of money pumped into a school can change that.

School Choice is important. Actually it's critical. Having said that, I'm not optimistic this SCOTUS will loosen the control on education to allow SC. Way too much $$ involved.
