Breakdown of Mississippi's run game vs LSU

Interesting stuff. It was an embarrassing performance even though I figured the defense would be exhausted after the Bama game; but you also have to give RichRod and UM some credit, the fake tosses and misdirections were designed and executed well against LSU's tite front that should theoretically be very good against that type of offense

It would have been as bad as ark and a&m game
LSU was blowing them out at half
It was a mentally emotionally 3rd qtr letdown more than anything else
They put up a lot of rushing yards on bama too

The way Ole Miss had that rushing attack going was reminiscent of the 2007 game vs. Arkansas.
I'm expecting a lot of improvements transitioning to a 4-3, including being better overall at safety.

Bo Pelini has entered the chat.

Pelini had a good deal of experience planning against spread offenses in the Big 12 before Neb left for the Big Ten, hopefully that comes in handy

I did a YouTube video right after that game and determined it wasn’t Ole Miss just dominating us up front, but it was more just a lapse in concentration on assignments and fundamentals from us. A lot of over running plays, a lot of missed tackles, etc

quote:yeah bc of what rich rod was doing. that's the point. He had a major role in helping us over run plays. It wasn't just an accident or lack of focus. Rich ate dave's lunch on scheming.
A lot of over running plays

Whatever it was, it was very frustrating. The defense didn’t have many lapses after that game.

Delpit on 1 leg is why half of those plays happened.

This x1000
It was beyond clear that Delpit was hurt and not at full speed. His angles suffered, and he couldn’t get to the line of scrimmage fast enough to shut down the long run possibilities.
Against a spread triple option attack, your safeties HAVE to be able to get to the LOS on the play side. The offense is looking to exploit a kick-out block in the c-gap or d-gap on a OLB in a 3-4. If that safety can’t fill in that hole at the 3-4 yd mark, it is a LONG day for the defense.
Credit to their OC, but the triple option is not a complicated scheme. If you have the ability to run it against a hobbled opponent, you turn that screw until they yank him/change scheme or until you win.
That’s exactly what OM did.

I’m glad Aranda is GONE.... Down Vote me to death....

I'm glad the D is going back to a 4-3 base.
It's going to be really interesting to see how some of these guys fit at DL and LB. There's a lot of potential along the front. Not a lot of experience, but a lot of size and strength to slow down the run game. Also young guys with speed like Brooks and Lee -- those two look like really intriguing players in defending spreads.

I blame that piss poor defensive performance vs. Ole Miss last season on Dave Aranda. As Dave Aranda also blamed it on himself as well. As he said he talked to individual players during the game, but never talked to the entire defense as a team and blames that for his failure.
Last year for the first 11 games of the season, despite the fact that LSU had an extremely talented defensive team, they under performed quite badly. However, they finally picked up their level of play tremendously in the final four games of the season to become the best defense in the country.

Ole Miss didn't run on LSU because the coach failed to talk to them as a team.

Linebacker play in the second half was none existant. Let's just chalk it up as a learning experience on a run to the natty.

I am just glad we are going back to the 4-3, never have been a fan of the 3-4 defense...

It’s almost as if when the defense was fully healthy they got better and became a very good defense. But that can’t be it Injuries are just an excuse right?
Beginning of the year the d line was beat up then Todd Harris went out and they had to find his replacement then Delpit was playing on one leg it seemed for a couple games which definitely showed in the Ole Miss game. When both the d line and Delpit were healthy for the postseason, along with Hampton’s emergence when Delpit went out giving them another option, the team played very well.

That's not what Dave Aranda said after the game. He said that although he did talk to several defensive players on defense during the game, what he said didn't work, and he blamed that on the fact that he didn't talk to the defense as a whole so everyone of them would be on the same page.
Even said he didn't understand why he did that because in the past under similar circumstance when he talked to the team as a whole, as opposed to individual defensive players, the adjustments always worked.
In any event, that is what Dave Aranda said after that game and what he blamed the piss poor play on. Claimed it was all his fault. Hence, I believe him instead of you.

Dave's D seemed to allow a lot of yards in most games

They were all watching the plays instead of just hitting somebody.
