Noramlly I've only ever checked clothing items or maybe some small electronics that I really never gave a second thought about keeping inside a locked suitcase while it was making its way through security.

But I've recently gotten into photography and will be traveling with my gear in August for a vacation. It's the first time I'll be flying with it so I think I have it all streamlined to have certain stuff on my person and check the equipment that is just too big to carry on. My primary camera case is what I'm most concerned about.

It's in a pelican case and has the capability to be padlocked but I'm curious on what the rules are for locking checked bags. It looks like there are TSA approved locks but I'm not really sure what makes them more acceptable for TSA. TIA

As long as it's a TSA approved lock it should be good. They can access all the approved ones with universal keys.

I think a baw on the travel board got his entire DSLR setup stolen from the overhead compartment recently on a flight.

If TSA wants it they're going to get it and if they can't open your lock they will break your luggage so there is literally no point.

I know someone who worked for TSA. Get a TSA approved lock and you will be fine.

Fun fact, TSA can’t and won’t confiscate any drugs you are carrying as long as it isn’t large amounts. They could steal them but they can’t take them from a carry on. They also know if you have it or not so don’t think you are sneaking it by then, they just can’t do anything about it.

What's considered a large amount? Asking for a friend.

As if the drugged out TSA bag sorters don't have a pair of bolt cutters sitting around for the days haul.

Don't bother checking anything you aren't prepared to lose. Its just that simple.

Can’t now blow just buy one of those universal keys off the internet though? Sort of makes the entire lock pointless at that point. I will probably end up getting the TSA approved one because it’s at least a small deferent.

I worked with a guy who knew how to pick every type of luggage lock. He would swap locks on bags when he was bored.

Valet check it at the gate.

I'd be so nervous to check my photography gear. I've been lucky enough to have everything fit in a carry on plus the personal bag. I've heard horror stories about photography gear being destroyed through the checking process.

I never check my camera gear. It goes on with me as my carry-on and personal item.

If you really need all of that gear, at least you have a Pelican case. Use a TSA approved lock. It provides a minor level of protection.

TSA doesn’t GAF about drugs. They’re taught to ignore them. The machines, dogs, scanners, etc are looking for weapons/bombs.

If you fly with a declared firearm in your checked baggage, and you don't have to use a TSA approved lock.

I last went on 3 day trip before the whole pandemic hit. I had a near completely empty tube of toothpaste in my carry on. Barely anything. Barely enough to last me those 3 days. They pulled my bag and confiscated it.

It legit took them 20 mins to complete this whole process. Eventually the screener herself stopped screening and did it herself cause no one else knew what they were looking for. Two people had looked through my bag. (I had plenty of time before boarding so I wasn’t worried. I was more so just perplexed on what actually triggered the bag check).

I have no faith or confidence in TSA common sense.

So maybe you’re right , drugs are probably cool from their standpoint.

They aren’t really hiring the best and brightest.

But they are taught not to look for drugs. As long as you don’t make it glaringly obvious, they don’t give a shite.
