They overplay their hand because they put out a narrative and the MSM always supports it, so they feel like they have all the cards. They end up overplaying their hand up until they discover that the voters don't buy into their bullshite.
That is why you see people with access to all the polling data being silent on what is happening right now. They know they can't be seen as supporting the rioters and looters right now. They are trying to figure out how to temper their positions.

Maybe in other parts of the country, but I don't picture riots going over too well in places like Mountain Brook, Collierville, Madison, etc.

This is where you are making your big mistake. As a former member of "the left," before it got bat shite crazy, I can tell you this is conservatives' biggest problem. They will stop at nothing. This BLM movement has finally pushed them past any semblance of restraint. Being patient comes at your own peril.

If the left always overplays their hand, why has the Overton window been shifting more and more to the left?
Maybe the overplaying is a preconditioning tactic they use to shift society to the left little by little? Get people used to the absurdities so they're more likely to accept less radical changes. I don't understand how people don't see this

15 years ago, the majority of the country was against Gay marriage. Today, we are ok with treating young kids with drugs to help them think they are a different gender. This is just one example of their success.
The left is winning big time.
They overplay on purpose as it brings everyone further left, little by little.
