re: MLB owners should cancel season

The MLBPA has continually proven to be the strongest rep of the major sports. Owners are going to have to come wayyyyy off of the idiocy they offered or you won't see a game this year.

In the long run the players and the owners are going to lose out. They could have been back to spring training and looking to be the first sport to reopen. Now they are going to continue to lose fans and youth to the NBA. If they don’t play this summer and then strike again MLB will go to NHL/MLS levels.

Absolutely. It is in everyone's best interest to come together and compromise. But the owners have poisoned the well to such an insane degree that I dont blame the union in feeling how they do.

All the owners had to do was grin and bear it after accepting the pro-rated salaries and use that as a bargaining chip come CBA talk because all this is doing now is increasing the likelihood of a lockout after 2021.
It took the NHL years to come around and I still don't think it's at the levels it once was

Listened to the Jeff Pascan/Russillo pod and he mentioned they’ve lost a ton of the PA leadership that got them where they were to this point. Probably another reason why the owners are trying to see what they can get away with

The rest are entirely worthless, so it's not a high bar to clear.

I think basketball has by far the strongest player union and it's to a point where they basically call the shots now which is really unprecedented

Like could you imagine what would happen if the owners tried to install a hard cap? Lebron would get on that wine and lose it

Can I get a link to a hard news story from March saying there was a solid agreement? If so I agree the players are reasonable in not budging at the same time it doesn’t really end well because it seems like the owners are digging in and fine without playing the rest of the season.
Here you go
The relevant portion:
quote:
Each player signed to a major league contract at the start of the season shall have his salary determined by multiplying his full-season salary by the number of games scheduled (not adjusting for weather-related postponements or cancellations) divided by 162, minus any advanced salary. In the event of an additional interruption or delay, the salary shall be determined by multiplying his full-season salary by the games played by the player’s club divided by 162. Thresholds and amounts for bonuses, escalators and vesting options would be reduced by using the same formula. A player previously at spring training who is unable to report because of travel restrictions or visa issues would be placed on the restricted list and receive up to 30 days of salary.
This details the cut the players already took. It was ratified by both sides late March after games had been suspended due to Covid.

Yeah, the major-league players are such noble martyrs. Spare me.
Both sides are garbage. With owners, it's expected. But it just floors me how many people, especially the dip shits in the media, who are sympathetic to players. You have thousandaires who have lost jobs, and yet millionaires and billionaires are going to fight over billions.
There's no defense of either side. Of all of the people for whom I would have any sympathy, none of them are a player or an owner.

That's your go-to answer for everything. At least you're predictable.

That's my go to answer when people throw out shite that doesn't deserve a response. Yes

Break it down for me. Percentage chance, is beisbol happening this year?
Posted on 5/29/20 at 7:37 pm to Bunk Moreland
I dont know. This is clearly the most contentious I have ever seem the two sides which isnt good. But I ultimately think both understand what's at stake if they dont get an agreement done. The players will take less than prorated salaries, but more than what was initially offered, and in return they will get something. Like a higher tax ceiling with less punitive penalties for going over in 2021
That gets a season and should establish a quid pro quo if the owners want to try to tie player salary to attendance in the future

I keep hearing this like...like its a drastic thing
It’s a drastic thing because the owners keep claiming that they’ve seen very little increase in revenue over the last 10 years when just the public data shows that it should’ve increased three fold.
The MLBPA requested the books to judge how dire the situation is themselves. The owners turned over bullshite that didn’t reveal any information. They’re intentionally attempting to avoid the request for a reason and I highly doubt it’s because of how broke they are.
The union has a right to the facts before they accept such a drastic pay cut for the players they represent.

Not saying it doesn't exist but ive not seen "public data" showing 3 fold increase. Ive seen Forbes articles talking basically about the zillow equivalent of team valuations..but even then revenues would be estimates. That being said. Isnt there a a contract negotiation looming in 2 yrs? Take care of that contention then.
I don't think it can be argued that having no fans in the stands is a significant loss of revenue. Yes there is TV yes there is merchandise but ..and it does vary ..having people in seats and buying beer and nachos and programs and the ads atb the stadium that those eyeballs see...that all provides a revenue source for the owners to pay players ( and coaches and trainers and back office and security and.....) Now owners have all same expenses ( less security staff etc) but without 20 to 40% of the revenue? I don't see how this is an owner issue. Espn and foxb aren't coming to owners to say ..."we will give you more money"
MLBnetwork will probably see a jump in fees ( and there may be some room to negotiate there...as long as they remove blackout requirements)
I think its bad faith to say its a 50% pay cut...yes its 50% of the salary but same on a per game basis (owners are taking a bigger perxentage then)..and not drastic to ask the players to take a concession to offset gate revenue. Hell..at least do away with car detailing privileges
