If you have Tom Fitz and Bourdian saying Nor Joes Is good , who can argue?

Fitz
“ Nevertheless, the muffuletta in particular and the other sandwiches made with Italian meats, cheeses, and dressings are candidates for the best in town."

Bourdian

Home to one of New Orleans' best muffalettas."

As much as you profess to know about how a great muffuletta is made, maybe you ought to open a deli and teach all us "unwashed" how it's properly done.

Not in NOLA, but Anthony's Deli in BR is a very legit muffuletta

I for one enjoy your posts and opinions, and like your list.
However, to say that Central Grocery is #1 by a wide margin, although your opinion, so subjectively accurate, is not shared by me.

I put DiMartino's above CG because I do think CG delivers a bread bomb, and simply put DiMartino's bread is better. Also, DiMartino's delivers theirs heated too, which means Napoleon House is not the only heated Muff in the top 10.

Keep doing you, at least a few of us like it.

Personally, I prefer more meat on my muffaletta than Central Grocery provides. The reason Rouse’s muff is so mediocre is that the bread isn’t good and the olive salad lacks flavor. Rouses brand olive salad has zero punch to it, so their muffs are out of balance.

Personally, I also prefer a hot muff. While non-traditional, the Liuzza’s Frenchaletta is excellent, but I wouldn’t call it “best”.

Best hot I’ve ever had was from Anthony’s in BR, and best cold is actually the one from Murray’s in STA, but that may just be nostalgia talking.

Nor Joe's was highly disappointing.

My favorite around the City is DiMartinos.

World Deli is solid. Good bread to
meat ratio. More oily than others, but I prefer it that way.

A fix for the dreadful Central Grocery muffaletta would be to take a couple slices of Evangeline bread into their deli, scrape the little scrawny scraps of meat and olive salad out and put it on the Evangeline bread.

That would establish the proper bread/meat/olive salad ratio.

And save the bread. You could feed a family of four for a solid week off of it.

I have noticed no decrease in Central’s meat since 1990, when I had my first muffuletta there

Good lord, you’re young? Or was the French Quarter off limits to you until you were 40?

DiMartino's definitely the best, but Francesca's by Katies on Harrison has a really nice one too.

Agree. I used to live in the Ole Metrys and stumbled upon it about 7 years ago. The muff was average at best.

Not sure about now, but there's a small neighborhood grocery store on Friscoville St. in Arabi called Arabi Food Store and at one time they were praised by local food critics for their muff. I had a few in the past but it's been years since I ate one there, but it was very good.

Good rec. I havent had it in awhile but back in the day it was bomb.

I was down there in Arabi less than a month ago and stopped in there and had a hot sausage po-boy dressed and my stepdaughter had a ham & swiss po-boy and both were very good------and very filling.

I'll have to give their muff a try the next time I'm down that way to see how it compares to what they made years ago.

When I was just a kid I went to Arabi Elementary right across the street and that stores was there back then, and that was in the late 50's.

This was the muff that I got from Anthony's a couple of weeks ago. It was delicious and I recommend it highly!

[edit]: it has a lot more carrot (as you can see) in the olive salad than most people might be used to from Central, but I liked the added sweetness as it balanced the salty/sour of the traditional olive salad nicely.
