ULL's complaints

One thing I've noticed since moving back to the Lafayette area is a cult-ish segment of (mostly older) ULL supporters with a borderline psychotic hatred/inferiority complex for LSU, e.g. they picked up on obvious bs horror stories from Oklahoma and Clemson fans after the last playoff and disseminate those on FB as proof people from "east of the basin" are vile animals or w/e and before the game, the local ESPN radio guy got on and made some snarky remarks about how Clemson had the first "Death Valley." Most LSU ppl here just brush off their assclownery or even apologize (which is good, don't give them attention).
I wasn't old enough to really understand the issue when I first lived here, but is there any basis to these assholes' claims about how LSU tried to put USL "in their place" and stop them when they tried to change their name to UL (like that would make a big difference) or is it just inferiority complex run amok? I'm sure this topic has been addressed here before, just curious if any older people know more details about the origins.
Personally I still try to support the Cajuns as well, but it's hard when their most vocal fans are so obnoxious and poster children for little man syndrome

This, all day and every day in Lafayette.
Its the town's identity.

Take a look around, half the assholes can't even figure out how to lift a truck and have it at some ridiculous angle. Lafayette is washed up and in an identity crisis. Lafayette wants to be an Austin but can't, Lafayette wants to be like New Orleans, but can't, Lafayette has no identity, but tries so hard too.. Yes in 1984 USL switched to the University of Louisiana and the states LSU grads went on a crusade to have it changed back, it's known as the "LSU Rule" LINK

Yeah I like the place but there's definitely a group that's not comfortable in its own skin: "We're a cosmopolitan cULtural oasis beset by Anglo rednecks in north and east Louisiana!" No, you're mostly known as a place where offshore workin T-boys with bad tans go for a night out slamming daquiris and drivin white pickups

Yep. I don’t know what their problem is but those Lafayette people have a massive inferiority complex, which is hard to do when you’re comparing to a shithole like Baton Rouge. It’s painfully obvious when you see Bama merch in Lafayette and when St Thomas Moore plays Catholic High or U-High. Never seen such vitriol from people over a freaking high school football game.

I mean they call themselves the “University of Louisiana” so that tells you all you need to know about how inferior they feel.
Posted on 5/24/20 at 2:57 am to SlickRickerz
I never heard ULL fans refer to the school as The University of Louisiana until maybe the mid-2000's. The University of Louisiana system didn't start until the late 90's, so it was still USL until at least then.

Idk what cognitive dissonance goes into wanting to be called the "University of Louisiana" while considering the rest of the state unworthy of you. People should just accept what it is: a decent, mid-sized Gulf coastal city surrounded by dumps.

An interesting thing is the opposite isn't true at all. I've never met anyone who cared enough about Laffy/ULL to hate it. The fact is if it were not for this board, I would seldom think about Laffy at all.
People say that Laffy is a much nicer place to live than BR. I don't know if that was true in the '80s, but I'm sure it's true now (I won't go into why). You'd think that would be enough for Laffy people.
Oh, and change OohLaLa to the University of Acadiana.

All-time football record:
LSU: 22
SLII/SLI/USL/ULL: 0
Fun facts:
Largest victory margin: 1936: 93-0
Shutouts: 16 games
*ULL has never scored more than 7 pts against LSU in a football match
ULL went 10 games straight without scoring a single point on LSU between 1925 and 2002
All time point record:
LSU: 988
ULL: 25

This is deeper than that. Older Laffy folks (who would be say 100 years old this year) used to cry how much better they were than Lake Charles. This was back when each had only a single public high school and Laffy guys who holler how Lake Charles got better athletes from nearby by their dads getting jobs and the plants to relocate. None of it true. USL then would compare itself to McNeese (which only went from junior college LSU feeder to full 4 year college in 1950).
Then USL opted to compete with major colleges the season after its football team went 0-10 against the likes of Southeastern, Northwestern, Northeastern (now ULM), LA Tech, McNeese and Lamar (Nicholls didn't have football yet). It's had the death penalty twice for paying basketball players. The first time in mid 70's with Bo Lamar and Roy Ebron and their walking around campus with full length mink coats and brand new Caddies with big swan hood ornaments and throwing cash everywhere.
It's not the athletes who were like this. An uncle was on their pre-WWII national championship boxing team (it was actually of the biggest tournament type bouts in Philly) and had no such jealousy. His only loss pre the tournament was to an LSU boxer. He won all others by KO or TKO as a light heavyweight.
Laffy would still be the size of Natchitoches if not for Lake Charles city leaders opting not to build office space for the burgeoning oil industry and Heyman building the Oil Center in Laffy for them to move to there.

The funniest thing about Lafayette is that people who live in River Ranch actually think they live in the Hollywood Hills and try to look down their long, curved, Cajun noses at people.
Dude, you paid 550k for a condo in what was a crawfish pond 15 years ago, just so you could be closer to Costco

Some local alums made fun of it calling it Oo La La
For decades they strived to be Little Houston.

The fatal flaw with this thread is that people are confusing Lafayette people with USL people
USL people are a pretty damn small subset of Lafayette people
Somebody in this thread hit the nail on the head. Lafayette is a much better place to live now than Baton Rouge.

that's pretty funny. New Orleans schools look at Baton Rouge schools the exact same way.

I prefer the old acronym: USL, University of Slow Learners.
It fits the town of Laffy perfectly.

LOL. Their place is somewhere way beneath LSU (like all the other universities in the state). No one tries to put them there. It’s just the natural order.
But i do agree the inferiority of the die hard Cajuns homer is off putting. Luckily most everyone I know and work with in Lafayette isn’t like this. They have pride in UL but they don’t harbor any illusions about being superior to LSU. I find most Cajuns fans to share equal enthusiasm for the Tigers.

I have fun trolling ULL grads...
Grad: yeah I went to UL and graduated in '08
Me: you mean ULL?
Grad: *angry face*
