An Alabama “big time” offer for these very highly rated Louisiana kids did not result in the development that would lead them to the next level. All had lackluster careers in Tuscaloosa and there exists the possibility that had they chosen a different college, their football development would have led them to greater success in the their post-college years. Those 5* players like Cam Robinson, Landon Collins and Eddie Lacy (all recruited to UA with illegal inducements) were already with significant talent that they would have succeeded anywhere, with or without proper development.

Most of these names are already unrecognized by most people, even though they were very highly rated. Their careers at Alabama were undistinguished and their pro careers nonexistent or limited at best. This fact should be made known to every high school player considering Alabama.

This is a good post.

I've been thinking about the same thing for years.

maybe we want those kinds of players to go to Alabama. We were probably better off without them, so why make in known before considering a1abama.

Moses has been a huge disappointment so far. He was supposed to be what Devin White became, but he turned into a solid LB.

Seriously I never knew Irv Smith jr was from N.O, makes sense why he was brought up so often here while at Bama

The argument is not about “can’t miss” players; they can succeed anywhere, although both Williams and Carter underachieved for their talent level and their names will be lost in anonymity. Carter is a free agent with the Jets, but the odds of his subsequent success are low.

It is absolutely true that there has been an inordinately high number of highly rated LA players who have faded quickly once they signed with Alabama.

It will be particularly useful to see how a list like this looks going forward. I say this because with our new offense and our excellent player development (Justin Jefferson, for example), and our success getting players drafted and successful in the NFL LSU has such a good story to tell that I suspect nearly all great in-state players would want to be at LSU. We have it all going for us right now, so let's see if the number of defections goes down over the next few years.

I’m sure we are all happy for Smith, but there will be “misses” forever, just like other teams missed on JB, CEH and Jets. Alabama didn’t want Keon Alexander.

excellent player development

I agree that player development -or lack there of-should be a huge draw for any future recruit to LSU-or away from Alabama. You may argue that Alabama ranks high yearly in the number of NFL players and that this fact argues against their lack of player development. In actuality, UA’s remarkable recruiting since Saban arrived-curiously- has been second to no one for almost 9 years. It is this fact that leads to their success, not player development. In this year’s draft, Alabama draftees averaged 4.4 rating out of high school; the probability of being an NFL player with this high school rating is exceptionally high and these odds are iregardless of what college they attend. LSU’s record 2020 draft class, on the other hand, averaged 3.6 in high school, meaning the odds of being drafted are markedly lower. I assert this translates to better player development at LSU. KUDOS to Eaux and his assembled staff.
