A friend of mine has a nephew who works in Silicon Valley. He has been there for about two years. He rents a place with someone else. He told me it is a small apartment. One of the least expensive ones... And he pays almost $2000 a month.. That's his half.

He started out making making decent change, but still... Almost $4000 a month for a small, one of the least expensive apartments? $48k a year to rent a place. Get the frick outta here with that shite.

You can find deals out there. Back in February 2017, I got a 1 bed/1 bath 430 sq foot in-law in San Francisco. Free parking spot, shared laundry outside my doorway. Cost me $1490 before utilities. When I moved out a few months ago, I was only paying $1615/month.

Sad thing is the city would probably not grant you the permit to turn the shantee into a McMansion.

and on top of all that you’re living in a state that punishes you for being successful enough to afford that price tag. Your income will be taxed at 50% and your property taxes will be through the roof.

You’ll also be demonized by local government officials if you dare to complain about the homeless people hanging out in front of your overpriced home and neighborhood.

Uh, that would be $14 million for her house.

I think you mean $1,400/sq ft.

We have friends in Newark. Both work for big tech companies and pay $3,250 for 1,800 sq ft. Both are working from home through the end of the year. They are actually hoping to go completely from home and only fly in when necessary which would allow them to move back to Louisiana and live like kings due to the drastic reduction in cost of living.

That's awful. So locals who have been there for decades can be effectively evicted from their homes because property tax alone is not affordable?

I don’t know the specifics but California has a law in their constitution that protects people from rising property taxes.

Once everyone starts making work from home as part of regular work routine, people will move out of Silicon Valley. Prices might go lower.

No reason to go to office. I work for a company in CO from Baton Rouge. Moved back for family reasons and Denver house prices are ridiculous

Ah okay i was gonna say even though 3200 seems pretty cheap for a 1BR
In Newark you can easily find one for less than that.
But don’t think that city has been gentrified at all

It's not bad, relatively. There's been times when prices here were similar.

I lived in a 400 sq ft apartment in NYC with my girlfriend and it was like 2650 in 2000-2001.

It was fun for a few months but after a year I'd had enough. Lots of bars, restaurants and entertainment doesn't make up for living in a shoe box with no vehicle for me

Fairly small advertising/media company. I actually left there right before 9/11. Went back to LSU at night and got a different degree.
