My cousin got 4-5 inches in his entire house. He is fully insured homeowners and flood. What steps should he take and what should he expect? Any advice is appreciated.

Didn't some people get screwed in 2016 flood for doing this before adjuster could make it out?

Call insurance company, take a LOT of pictures with time stamp on. Document every room and cabinet and piece of furniture that had damage.

Sounds like his floor isn’t level.

Pictures and video.

Water remediation immediately.

Insurance claim ASAP, but continue mitigation.

My house was flooded due to a water line blowing out and we got about an inch or two of water in side. Never replaced any sheetrock or baseboard.
Maybe because that was "clean" tap water not dirty flood water

I’ve done this twice (tree destroyed home lots of water and toilet overflow for hours another time).

-Amazon a moisture meter and do his own checking
-Double check mitigation work and encourage extra removal
-Hire a second opinion mitigation company at the end to audit the work

Was this water from ground up or from the ceiling?

Recent personal experience. File a claim. My company has an account with ServPro. They came in and did a good job, and were paid directly. My only issue is that my house is old, built in ‘53. They had to do asbestos testing that was not covered by my insurance. Turned out to be no big deal because it was my neighbor’s tree that had fallen THROUGH my house.

Get a contractor that is familiar with insurance companies. They do things a little differently. No matter how good you THINK your insurance company is, you better be ready to question everything. They are soulless crooks.

My company, that will be reimbursed every dollar, offered me less than $9000 in the beginning. At the end of things, we were right at $40K in repairs.

ALE, or Additional Living Expense, can be a sticking point. Ask questions. NOT every receipt can be handed in for reimbursement. Be clear before you start spending money.

Contrary to what this may sound like, my experience finished up fine. But I had quite a few fights along the way..

My $.02.

ETA: obviously an insurance agent gave the down vote....would love to know why.

Take lots of pictures and videos some folks say. Listen to them.

Start gutting to the level necessary.

Good Luck to your cousin.

I once owned a townhouse off of Burbank that flooded three times. It's a mess to clean up plus ripping that wet carpet out is more difficult than you would think. Even if you get all of the repairs done and new furniture, the place doesn't feel the same. I definitely left after the third flood and after I moved, that place hasn't flooded since. That was a little over twenty years ago. I really hated feeling tensed up when Baton Rouge got heavy rain. I would wonder if we would get flooded again. It really is a lot of work getting rid of furniture that was destroyed, removing sheet rock, ripping up stinky wet carpet, etc. The mildew smell is really bad too.

Save examples of flooring materials to show adjuster. Start an inventory of all damaged contents with value and picture.
