I would take the Silicon Valley job. You’re making 130K base salary.

In Silicon Valley, that's what the guy that drives the shuttle bus makes.

ETA: CSB inbound. I have a friend who moved out there a couple of years ago. His rent was something like $1400 a month. I went out there to visit and his "apartment" was one room that was literally big enough for a futon, a TV, and one closet. The kitchenesque area had a half-sized fridge, a two burner stove, a sink, one cabinet, and a two chair table. The bathroom was so narrow that you had to manspread to be able to get your knees to fit so you could take a shite, a tiny little airplane sink, and a shower that wished it was as big as the shower in an RV. Also, the ceilings were like 6.5 - 7 feet. It was fricking miserable and claustrophobic. Less than 300 square feet. We're talking tiny house sized. That wasn't even anywhere near Silicon Valley. That was San Rafael. The price per square foot only goes up the further South you go from there.

But, he had gotten his dream job and moved out there to pursue it, so good for him. Small living ain't for me, though.

According to apartments.com
There are decent ones in San Jose for $2100 or so

You seem to be in a pretty good position with a job in hand

Just me but my mind would already be made up, especially considering that you're tired of the volatility of the oil business.

You may get that itch again when oil gets back to respectable levels, maybe then you have another decision to make then.

That’s not enough money to live in Cali.

I'm sure it does but I would imagine the jump in pay would probably cap out around 180k.

Wouldn't hurt to take the job for the experience and then look for a higher paying one in a few years. Take advantage of all the training they offer.

and $0 is enough to live in Louisiana?

I cannot believe the advice in this thread. Do you guys not see that the job market is going to be rough for a while?
O&G background and no family make this a no brainer really.

San Jose is one of the most expensive areas of the country. I'm sure that you already know this. You'd be living in an apartment on your income. Probably a relatively small one at that. I'm not sure how important that is to you.

Is the job in your current line of work or a total career change?

I love how everyone seems to assume he can just get a $50k/yr job in Louisiana right now.

Dude is on unemployment at the moment, and prospects in LA are slim. Take the San Jose job OP. You can always come back.

If you've been around for any of the "my wife and I make $150k/yr but we're middle class" threads you shouldn't be surprised by the advice in this thread.

You should take the job in Silicon Valley and work hard, network, rent a cheap apt. Then in 2 years find a similar job in an emerging tech city or a slightly more affordable city like Salt Lake or Portland or Denver where $150k or so is still a decent amount of money and where you can grow your career, buy a nice home, and start a family.

The job is the same as what I currently do and I'm extremely good at it. It's programming and supervising in a machine shop. It just depends on what the shop makes, around here it's all oilfield, this shop strictly makes medical equipment. I've been looking around the Arizona/New Mexico area and I assume most of the people looking to hire put people looking to relocate on the back burner because I have a very good resume and haven't heard much back.

You know your needs and your finances. That will determine what you can buy, and where.
