Where does Lion King rank on the top animation list?

The original 1994 version. I have to say it’s my favorite animated movie ever. I get goosebumps every time I hear circle of life. I also think Be Prepared is one of the most slept on songs of any Disney movie ever.
I need to watch a few of the older classics before I can give my final input. What are y’all’s favorites and where does Lion king rank for you?

Lion King is my #1 by far. The Secret of NIMH is in the next tier though.

The original is a classic. The remake was beautiful to look at, but completely without soul.

In terms of in comparison to rest of Disney’s animation line up, I’d give it an A-. Top Tier but at the bottom of the Top Tier. I think it suffers that Simba is not all that interesting of a character nor is Nala. Also Scar gets kind of boring and whiny in the second half of the film.
As for animation as a whole, solidly in B-Tier. Great, but it’s not a masterpiece or near masterpiece. I’d say Pixar alone has at least 9 superior films to the Lion King, and we haven’t even gotten to the other studios yet.

Lion King and 101 Dalmatians GOATs

I'm not representative of the general audience.
I love Jeremy Irons as Scar, love a couple of the songs, and love Timon and Puumba, but I never liked the movie on the whole.
Matthew Broderick was not strong casting for adult Simba IMO, "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" is one of the single most overrated Disney songs, and I thought the setting was bland and lacked all sense of magic or whimsy.
#1 Aladdin (best setting + peak Robin Williams)
#2 Beauty and the Beast (best songs, 2nd best setting, 2nd best villain)
#3 Lion King (best villain)
#4 101 Dalmations (major soft spot now that its my daughter's favorite - it's funny as shite and the distinctive animation makes it feel less dated)

Animati0on specifically or animated film?
In both categories it's top 10-15, I don't know about Top 3-5.
For animation I'd say the following are better looking films:
Spirited Away
Anastasia
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Akira
The Iron Giant
Snow White (I mean maybe technically not, but it's hard not to put this near the top of any animated list. It's purely groundbreaking)
Beauty and the Beast
And I'd put most of those over it in terms of film and add in other films I think are just better - Pinnochio, Nausicaa, Grave of the Fireflies, Prince of Egypt, An American Tale, Aladdin etc.
It's in the Top 15-ish for sure.

Ever see the original Ninja Scroll film? Or Vampire Hunter D?

It’s all subjective. And like I said, I still havent seen some of the classics. One of them being Aladdin. So I’ll watch that tonight.

101 dalmations has by far my favorite setting. 60s urban London? Also set out in the English countryside? It’s all great. I remember watching for the first time as an adult (and actually being able to appreciate it as a film instead of just a cartoon like when I saw it when I was a kid) and being shocked at how good it was even years later. But Disney movies tend to do this over and over. Love the atmosphere 101 dalmations sets along with the music.

I think it’s one step under the Lion King. While it’s still great, I find it a bit mean spirited and seems like a movie someone pissed off about a breakup would make, which it basically is.

I never liked the story of Lion King but the music was good.
Aladdin is my all time favorite.
