Since it’s wild, who knows, but it will probably remain with you unless a mate comes along. And good on you to save it. This is common with ducks. Late hatchers tend to be left behind as the mother can’t keep the early hatches safe waiting on the others.

Friend,
I have raised ducks my entire life.

I think that is called imprinting. Ducklings will recognize the first object it comes in contact with as it's parent. Obviously that is the hen that hatched them in most cases but sometimes the hen gets distracted and humans, dogs, or other critters become parents by default. This duck will probably always be a tame bird immune to humans but will eventually grow up and do more duck things than sitting outside all day.

It has imprinted on me and my wife. The kids, not so much.
We hope he will fly away when he's old enough to take to the skies. Is there a way to tag a duck? I'm guessing it's something that would go around a leg.

You should take a lot of pictures of the pet duck and post them in a bunch of different threads on the OT... it would be funny and original

They make great pets and need their wings clipped unless you don't care if they fly off.
They're really cute and devour a lot of insects.

Not when he's just sitting by your feet which he does 99% of the time when he's inside.
I'm about to put him back outside in his fenced in area with food, water and grass.

One of the friendliest most loyal pet I ever owned as a child was a duck. It would always stay by your side, quacked if a stranger came near, and was happiest with familiar people around. Won it at an Easter fair, and had no idea what to expect.

I have seven mallard ducklings in the back yard/pool area right now. They hatched the first day of the lock down. Mom is there most of the time still and dad shows up when he wants. They have been great therapy along with vodka, wine and beer. They will be leaving in about two weeks is my guess. The same hen had a nest last spring.

Yes, it is called a band but that is just gonna make it a target for some dipshite kid in ur hood to kill it with a BB gun so he can put it on his duck call lanyard. If you do band it, get a band that is colored so it doesn't look like a band the Feds would put on a wild duck.
Don't worry, once that duck starts getting wing feathers, it will start getting out more. The problem is gonna be that it is tame and will have no fear of humans.

I can't answer any of your questions but that's a pretty awesome drinking partner if you ask me.
Take the win where you can. If he flies away it's because of the split tail and then you can't blame him.

If it stays within the lake area, he may be alright. It's a huge neighborhood and no one hunts the ducks here; unless they are shooting them with BB or pellet guns.

Awesome how he goes inside. Closest I have gotten to them is about a foot. He will most likely leave, but if the hen that laid the eggs is still around she will probably nest there next spring.

I just candled a few of the eggs.
The mallard eggs look like they are starting to form, but the khaki campbell eggs don't show anything in them.

Where they live is awesome, very secluded and tropical with a lot of cover. There is an outside cat that has tried to get them a few times, but he has a collar with a bell on it so when he gets close they hear him and haul arse into the pool. I chased him off Saturday morning.
