Anyone raise ducks as pets?

Do they fly away once they reached maturity or hang around forever if they are raised by people?
We had a nest in the neighbors yard where the hen left with several of the ducklings the previous day and another egg hatched and it was abandoned.
Nearly 6 weeks later, I have this mallard drake that will sit by your feet all day outside.

It wants food.

Even if you have food elsewhere where it can get to it, it’ll sit by anyone who is outside.

Farms clip wings so they can't fly

I did, they will stay if you keep feeding them
They will wonder around but if you put out some corn every evening, they'll come back and stay by. Especially if you have a pond

It will probably hang around till other ducks pull it away in the fall.

I did as a kid. My dad got us three
The ducklings naturally took to my dad, so they followed him literally everywhere. Well, one day the followed him while he was cutting the grass on his riding lawnmower.........
Then we had no more ducks

That's a live decoy baw.

There are plenty of mallards and Canadian geese on the lakes. No decoy is needed.

That’s cool that y’all have bonded.
Are you sure it’s a drake? Looks more like a hen to me.

When I was a kid, my uncle had a pet Muscovy named Disco Duck. He was clipped and kept in the backyard by a high fence. I left the gate open one day and disco duck was no more

You can see the top of his head in the sunlight glistening green.
If you go inside, he will cry until someone comes outside or lets him in the house. If he's in the house, he will just post up by your feet and sleep or nibble on your toes.
Also, I have a bunch of fertile eggs in a incubator, so in 3-4 weeks, I may have some ducklings to give away.

I love ducks. But they make a mess. They like to wet everything when theh eat it, messy shits, just tough to own. But in your situation if you have lake/pond those things are not nearly as big of issue

Kept him in a large clear container with food & water with pine shavings to prevent it from making a mess until he was old enough to run around outside.
The dogs don't mess with him, either.

One of my French Marans Black Coppertop hens hatched 3 chicks the other day.
I don’t know how to post pics but please Google them. They are beautiful chickens.
Hopefully this Covid crap will end soon. I want the grandkids to make pets out of the next batch.
Sometimes when I’m outside sitting down one of my hens will hop in my lap.
Having animals around is a lot of fun.
Please keep me in mind for the ducklings. I have a good home for them on the water.
They will be well taken care of.

I have 6 day old mallard hens arriving from California this week. Of course they won’t be a day old by the time I get them. We have a 1 acre fishing pond and my neighbors down the street have their own private pond too. We have had as many as 36 or so flying back and forth. Mallards will usually stay, but they can be traitorous assholes and some have flown off about 3/4 mile down the road to another private pond with an automatic feeder. Hens are vulnerable during breeding season. Right now we have a 2 week old orphan and she’s still friendly and imprinted on us, but her instincts are kicking in more and more each day. When she and the others I ordered from CA are able to fly a little, they’ll be released. 13-16 weeks.

Send em up in this In November. Had some tough luck getting mallards where I have been hunting during duck season.

A friend had five and a safe enclosure for them at night. Days they wandered the yard, ate bugs, swam in her small pond that was spring fed. They were friendly. Then four wild ducks joined them. For the amenities. Always kept about three feet from my friend and always followed the tame ones.
My friend ended up calling the wild ones the Riff Raff.
