With the Kings School package I purchased I got a bunch of additional videos with it. One was walking you through the knowledge portion. They talked specifically about having legible and organized paperwork.

Not sure what bush plane I’m going to try to purchase yet but I’m definitely going to compare the maintenance cost. Would love to have a supercub at some point but I think I’m going to start out with a little more cargo room first.

Honestly I think the best starter plane is a late model 172. You can also lease it to the local flight school but just account for the additional 100 hours for your costs.

Finished up several years ago and was a flight instructor until I had enough hours for a “real” gig. I’ve kept my CFI/CFII/MEI certs current. Feel free to shoot me an email. Happy to help in any way you need.

That’s what I always tell everyone who wants to buy a plane. The plane is cheap...the maintenance is expensive. This new ADS-B garbage also costed me...

What kind of plane do you own?

Awesome. If you ever get a chance to fly in a plane with the Perspective+ suite, give it a whirl. Incredible the amount of technology Cirrus are equipped with.

Yes and no. I’m sure there’s a few OT baws out there with $30k-$80k boats that could just as easily have a plane if that was their hobby instead (and pass a medical).

Funny you say that because it’s what I’m considering right now. Haven’t dove into it to much because I have plenty of time and want to get some recommendations from local pilots that often do beach landings or use floats. Had a pilot that just transferred to McCarthy that was a guide/air taxi for most of his career. We had plans to take some trips this coming summer but he ended up having an opportunity to get closer to home. Hoping his replacement has similar experience.

If you are mechanically inclined, you might consider an E/AB airplane. You can do most of your own work and you can buy parts at NAPA. Not sure how many seats you will need, but there are some super nice and rugged kit planes out there.

The glass panel avionics must be amazing to fly behinds. I quit flying a long time ago, I have never flown a plane with any type of GPS aid, or moving maps, had LORAN C in one planes was as high tech as I ever got. It was usually paper charts, VOR dialed up on the NAV/COM and a wrist watch.

You can buy an older c150 for what a moderately priced car goes for.

Not hardly. No roads here so it's not like I need a vehicle. I do keep my 2003 SUV at the airport in town and use it 4-5 times a year.

Lots of dependable planes here for $50-$60k. Just millions of square miles of great fishing and hunting around and you are land locked without a plane. I have a boat and can access quiet a bit of the land by boat and during the winter if the lake freezes we can explore quiet a bit by snow machine... but a plane here is really worth the money in my opinion.

All that tech is cool and all but when it goes pear shaped not being to navigate using a compass, wristwatch, and a paper sectional chart will frick you over. Also those screens keep your focus inside the cockpit and it should be outside...see and avoid.

Eh. I find the glass cockpits are a lot easier and quicker to read/interpret than steam gauges.

I’ve had MFDs and PFDs fail inflight and still hand backups.

Agree to disagree here.

PFD fails? Pull out the iPad or other electronic flight bag. iPad fails? Pull out the Smartphone. The likelihood of all 3 of the above failing in the same flight? A statistical impossibility.

Paper sectionals are completely obsolete and take up way too much space/time to fiddle with.

I had a complete electrical failure while flying when I was instructing. Know what I did? I navigated with my iPad via ForeFlight, called tower from my cellphone - connected via Bluetooth to my headset - and received a landing clearance. Technology has changed the game for the better.

I do agree that it can cause complacency and be a distraction at times. The positives far outweigh the negatives, though.
