Anyone completely confused by Delpits stock?

Kid was obviously hurt but still won the Thorpe and was a beast when he was finally healthy in the final which were all vs top 4 teams. He made huge plays in big games, was a strong leader, never had any issues at all. Great kid.
He’s big enough to play box LB. he’s fast enough to line up in nickel, he’s strong enough to rush, he’s smart enough to ply SS or FS. He can do it all.
He does need to work on his form when tackling but he’s proven he can do it.
I just don’t get it. Someone’s gonna get a way with highway robbery if he gets out of the 1st.

He was a top 5 pick at one time

He won the Thorpe off of the 2018 season. He couldn’t tackle Jake from Little Giants for most of the 2019 season.

Unless his injury is worse than known, he won’t fall out of the first round

The whole injury excuse used for the poor performance by Delpit (and LSU’s defense as a whole) for most of the season is complete BS.
Yet people keep parroting it. Even respected analysts.
Though I have a theory, I don’t know for sure why they struggled. Sure as hell wasn’t injuries though. This was arguably the most healthy football team throughout an entire season that I’ve ever seen.
All that matters is they pulled it together and played like the best defense in the country at the end of the season when we really needed them.

after watching him in the 2019 season NFL teams have reason to be somewhat cautious about using a 1st round pick on him. 2019 compared to his play in 2018 looked like two completely different players. Can it all really be written off to a nagging injury?

He was measured at 6'3 213 at Pro Day which was the biggest he has ever measured. I still wouldn't quite consider that big enough to be an NFL box safety especially considering his history of tackling issues. He did run a faster 40 than most people expected but he ran it hand-timed so it is hard to compare it to the Combine 40s. I do think he can play FS or SS but let's not act like he didn't hurt himself this season with his spotty play.

He didn’t participate in the combine and hasn’t been evaluated by any team doctors. With injuries being cited as the reason for his step back in play and tackling woes, that’s a big deal.
Couple that with specific team needs and teams generally not valuing the safety position as much as say QB, OL, DE, CB, and WR and you’ll see why he’s starting to slip. Don’t be surprised if there are no S taken in the first round this year.

Delpit had multiple injuries included an ankle injury that limited his mobility and explosiveness and a shoulder injury that affected his tackling. The shoulder injury occurred early in the season during the Texas game and the ankle injury occurred later in the season against Auburn. I think a healthy Delpit will be a steal in the draft this year in the second round.

No he didn't.

Grant Delpit played much of the season nicked up. He missed a game. Was in and out of several others. Those are facts...His play dropped off, and you think there’s zero chance nagging injuries had anything to do with that?

Not really, he won the thorpe award based upon 2018 not 2019. I know it doesn't make sense but often that is how these awards go. He was injured most of 2019 and it effected his play big time. This happens every year with a few players. Hopefully he goes at the back end of the 1st so he ends up on a pretty good team.

He won it off pre-season hype.

I'm sure that didn't hurt.

I just try to remind myself that people who do mock drafts are not people who scout for NFL teams...

I've said tis over and over. IF a great player suddenly becomes meh, it is almost always an injury. BUT, GD still played, though not all that well. But he played through the hurt, and that is why he will go in round ONE...

This is from early August...
“There have been many missing Tigers over the previous three days, including six starters — sophomore outside linebacker K'Lavon Chaisson, who missed the last 12 games of 2018 with a knee injury, senior cornerback Kristian Fulton, junior safety Grant Delpit, senior defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence, junior defensive tackle Glen Logan, and freshman signee/January enrollee cornerback Derek Stingley Jr.”
So he had an undisclosed injury before the season, dinged up his shoulder against UT and had a nasty high ankle sprain against Auburn that really hampered him for a few weeks. He looked much better later in the season( began to look like his old self).

Delpit was slowed with injury and the turning point in the season in my opinion was the 2nd half of the Florida game and from that point forward the defense started more pressure, consistently pressuring QB's.
To me the point is the season when this LSU team started to get really special.

Soooooo, his 2018 season EARNED him the 2019 Pre-season hype. So which season do you think he played like the Thorpe winner????
