Assuming a mortality rate of .7% (high-end estimate of what the actual rate is thought to be), you would need 214 million infected to hit that number.

So roughly 65% of the population. That seems like a lot, but infectious disease isn't really my thing

To be fair, without mitigation the CFR would be wayyyy higher in the US because there wouldn't be enough capacity and vents to care for everyone.

But this 1.5 million is bogus, I agree with that.

If you didn’t watch his news conference yesterday, he said if we didn’t do the quarantine measures, the death toll could have easily been between 1-1.5 million Americans. Does this sound extreme to you, or do you believe it could have easily happened?

He was simply stating a number that was thrown around from the first models that basically involved us taking no protective measures.

Oh, that was a troll post.

Those numbers are bullshite and Trump is likely trying to play political cover now.

Trump has been an idiot during this entire situation, but for reasons opposite what morons like whoa believe.

Should never have backed off his wish to open mid-April.

I don’t think it’s extreme if we did nothing at all. If you look at the pockets where funeral home gatherings, smaller family gatherings, etc. where they didn’t social distance have resulted in multiple deaths and infections especially with people with pre-existing conditions at those gatherings I don’t think it’s a stretch.

ETA: It’s going to be interesting to see if we have flare ups from churches who had in person gatherings (not drive thru) for Easter.

Probably pumping those numbers up to make him look more like a savior to the voting public.

I don’t understand this board’s obsession with arguing hypotheticals. who fricking cares? it was an estimate.

1. I don't think we would have come anywhere CLOSE to that number even we had done nothing at all. We've had similar SARS type viruses roll through over the last 20 years are so and none have even remotely approached killing 1 million people.

2. The media, as they do everyday, is trying to blame EVERYTHING on Trump. So he's now taking those numbers (which I think even he would candidly admit are grossly overblown) and trying to turn this into a political "win". That is, if it wasn't for him taking such strong action, upwards of a million and a half people would have died.

As always, reality lies in between of all the posturing. Namely, this entire ridiculous episode is not "Trump's fault"; the potential death toll was grossly exaggerated; and Trump's actions in response didn't "save" us from all these deaths that were never going to happen in the first place.

Absolutely.

It isn’t like anyone can go back and say, “wait, that isn’t right” when they pushed the same Imperial College numbers and had people on the news stations claiming that hundreds of thousands to millions would die.

This board has been bashing people for using that number for weeks now.

It's fairly obvious why Trump said this. He knows the true number won't approach that, and wants to claim credit for it.

The more reasonable 100,000 to 200,000 level, we may still hit that.

People of all political leanings argue about this right here all day every day. No one seems to be able to agree in totality (unless it's a really funny meme...). If Trump is just saying things to bait "Dems", that seems like a childish way to govern right now in my book.

People on this board were posting it seriously that hundreds of thousands to millions would die at the start of this, but, yes, this board has been bashing it the past few weeks.

The news and other entities were claiming that would be the case at the start too.

Pretty straightforward and easy play for him.

Also, for 1 million Americans to die, roughly 250,000,000 Americans, or 75% of the country would have had to contract the virus this year

Seems a little high.
