It's a risk mitigation strategy. You have just as much chance of danger using a cell phone on a passenger aircraft after the flight attendant tells you to turn them off. There's a better chance of something catching fire by you getting in and then out of your car while pumping gas (static electricity) of vapors build near the tank/pump.
Maybe this was an issue before pumps had safety valves, but it's mostly BS I'm effect because that's what we've always done.

Diesel fumes aren’t volatile.

I would’ve lit up a smoke.

I do the same thing. Some loser turned me in to the attendant at Costco a while back. At least your sky screamer had the stones to confront you directly.

Yes, ever hear of in flight refueling.

Doesn’t matter. There is no danger in leaving your car on

I mean realistically, what could happen?
A spark? From what? You’re filling a tank of gas with a hose full of gas. A spark could cause a fire/explosion whether your car is running or not.
At the Indy 500 we always sit by the pits...one year a pit guy got set on fire from just this. At first no one knew he was on fire because the flames from that fuel are virtually invisible. I think the car spit a lugnut with it's tire and that created the spark.
I don't think your car is going to start on fire...I just think it's fricking pointless and you look stupid doing it. The car's exhaust is in the back, so is the gas tank...so if you want to be breathing that while you're standing there fueling up, have at it. But I'd prefer not to.

You'd think that after 10 years in the Army he'd know that gasoline has a much lower flash point than either diesel or kerosene-based jet fuels like JP5 or JP8.

Yes but those gifs are pointless unless we know what caused the fires. I’m guessing it has nothing to do specifically with filling up the tank while the engine is running.

HMMVVs use diesel fuel. Copters use jet fuel which is basically kerosene. Neither have the low flash point of gasoline. How can you not know this?

Yeah it does. The attendant was out picking up trash and walked all the way over to my pump just to tell me to turn my car off, and then back to the other set of pumps to continue trash collection
