I think these medical experts are caught in a world in which we have been lied to / over-hyped so many times by the media
What does the media have to do with what a medical expert says?

Because the media is reporting what the expert says, and/or broadcasting what the expert says.

I’ll give you an example that’s currently trending on TD. Thread title says UK mad that China has 40 times the number... If you read into it, they said 15 to 40. In this case a poster, not the media, grabs the most sensational number - 40! This is also what the media does.
It’s not necessarily the expert who is wrong; but the media that filters the expert. Same is true for global warming and corona virus. By reading the media we get the impression that scientists are predicting one thing when actually that thing is the far limit of what they are saying is possible.
