Why aren't the major distilleries making hand sanitizer

Some small distilleries in ind,ky, and tn are making it and donating it to hospitals.
Hell, it would probably sell better than spirits.

80 proof whiskey will sanitize your hands. Then you can get drunk in the process. Purell is good for one of those applications only.

Jack Daniels Tennessee Hand Sanitizer Company just doesn't have the same ring to it.

You can't pour whiskey on your hands when you come out of the grocery store

The several smaller ones I've heard about are giving it away for free.

I beg to differ. I can remember my dad pouring a couple of big swigs down his throat before ever starting the car when he came out of the liquor store so pouring it on one's hands shouldn't be a problem.

Making the stuff is not the problem. The problem is distribution.
I make distilled spirits as a hobby and have already replenished our sanitizer bottles. I mix 700 mls of azo (95+%) with 300 mls of glycerin with a few drops of your favorite essential oil (like lavender) and you are good to go. I use glycerin because the aloe in the stores is sold out but glycerin works really well. Makes your skin feel soft as a baby's bum.

Does hand sanitizer do much to combat coronavirus? How is it transmitted, via contact with stuff or is it airborne?

It's airborne. IMO the primary route of infection is breathing it in through your nose.
With that said, cleaning surfaces is important due to the fact that cleaning surfaces does kill the virus and prevent it from becoming airborne again.
Cleaning your hands is pretty important to in terms of not spreading the virus from your face (nose and eye area) to other places around you.

Hmmmm.
They must be ordering denatured ethanol. Breweries don't make spirits.
