in late 1971 Garcia got a wah pedal.
going in to 1972 he started using it in selected songs and jams, adding the first guitar effects sounds to his already distinctive playing style

around the same time hunter and hart wrote the genesis of a new song, based on the “whump-whump” sound of a water pump on Mickey’s ranch. The song was released first on Mickey’s solo album “rolling thunder” as “the pump song” with vocals by weir.

Weir re-arranged the song with a new vocal bridge and coda, and recorded it as “greatest story ever told” on his solo album “ace”. it entered the dead’s rotation in 71 and reached full flower, with an evil wah pedal mid song jam by Garcia, in 72-73

here it is in all it’s wah-drenched glory
