So what are the rules on this? I think truck is required. Domestic more so than import. Also, appears women don't do it even if in a domestic truck. More common in north La. than south. Seems to be dying a bit.

I do the 4-finger extension out towards the windshield from the top of the steering wheel

Pretty much my go-to as well.

Most all the menfolk on the road I lived on, bayou country, did it in the '80s. Any vehicle, any number of fingers - but mostly two, as I recall.
Folks here in the mountains, not so much.

My old man used to wave at every-frickin-body.
And would occasionally call one an a-hole for not waving back.

Had a friend that worked in NJ. Said he used to wave to people on some back road like normal and those people looked at him like he was insane.

I think there's a speed limit factor. Example - If I'm going 25 mph on a gravel road, probably initiate the wave on 75% of meetings. 25-40 mph paved road, 20-27.6%. Greater than 40mph it's a case by case thing.
Assuming we are talking about passenger vehicles. Folks on horses, tractors, and on the water boat pass wave frequency would definitely skew the numbers.

I give a thumbs up, it's different and exciting. The great part is that my hair/beard looks like this right now.

Two fingers. Never do it since I moved to VA, though. Wife said I walk calling too many people assholes for not waving back.

Used to know and old codger that did the two finger wave........with the hand on the shifter
"Hey you realize they can't see that?" "It don't make no difference".

One or two finger raise off the steering wheel for people you don’t know. If it’s someone you know, they get a full hand wave. These are the rules around here.
