Yep. Some of that was carryover from yesterday for California, but number was called too soon.

New York Times writes entirely rational article mirroring what this thread has been saying the past 2 weeks
Read the whole thing. I think you can detect annoyance on their end that this article appears to be true.
You know it's over if it finally came to them actually having to print this.

After a minor late-spring lull, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the United States is once again on the rise. States like Arizona, Florida and Texas are seeing some of their highest numbers to date, and as the nation hurtles further into summer, the surge shows few signs of stopping.
And yet the virus appears to be killing fewer of the people it infects. In April and May, Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, led to as many as 3,000 deaths per day, and claimed the lives of roughly 7 to 8 percent of Americans known to have been infected. The number of daily deaths is now closer to 600, and the death rate is less than 5 percent.
In general, experts see three broad reasons for the downward trend in the rate of coronavirus deaths: testing, treatment and a shift in whom the virus is infecting. The relative contribution of these factors is not yet clear. And because death reports can lag diagnoses by weeks, the current rise in coronavirus cases could still portend increases in mortality in the days to come.

And conventional wisdom is that "deaths lag cases" - COVID19 is going to challenge that for the future.
The new wisdom is, for good or bad, "testing drives cases." I think that is indisputable based on our experience the past 4 months.
It seems pretty consistent to me.. the elderly and unhealthy are in a lot of danger. The rest of us need to press forward so that Trump can run on the economy

Backlogged deaths are going to make a high total today. 117 for Arizona. They only registered 1 yesterday.

Yeah was really hoping the post holiday weekend spike would be in the 5-6 hundred range, but I have a feeling we are looking more at 8-9 hundred today. Also hope to be proven wrong.

I wouldn't be shocked if 1,000 is hit.

Same.

Mortality down to 4.2% and falling.
Trump tweeted:

Why does the Lamestream Fake News Media REFUSE to say that China Virus deaths are down 39%, and that we now have the lowest Fatality (Mortality) Rate in the World. They just can’t stand that we are doing so well for our Country!
No one reports on mortality ranking. Are we really at the low end of the rankings? Definitely flies in the face of MSM coverage, if so.

The more cases you add without impacting the fatalities, the lower the mortality goes.

We have found WAY more cases than anyone else, so it makes sense.

New York, Arizona, Florida, New Jersey, and California have all reported already. The only "hot spot" left for the day is Texas, from what I see. However, many other states are reporting higher numbers today, likely due to the holiday weekend.
6-7 hundred range sounds about right.

According to WoM which has the best stats for country level data.
Out of most of the developed world, the US mortality rate is the lowest. Keep in mind that mortality is a function of testing, the more testing we do, the lower the mortality rate will go.
I filtered the countries to not show any country with less than 50K cases.

California is from yesterday. Their 100 for today hasn't even started. Notice no cases yet.

Those China numbers
I pretty much multiply their case numbers by 100 and their deaths by 50 and start with that as my "low" estimate.
Has to be better science that those bullshite numbers.

Some states report multiple times a day. NY usually has a second report in the evening. WoM normally reflects this; however, the COVID Tracking Project won't since they cut off at 4pm CST.
California is another state that reports multiple times a day.

Over 500. I wouldn't put too much into the total today. Same for this past weekend. Normal starts the rest of this week.

Chromedome, I keep an eye on Louisiana and compute two stats...
death rate of cases reported, which continues to drop, my calculation is 4.8% today
percentage of tests performed to cases reported, which is 8.1% today...
I'm going to track this for a week or so and post daily...
So for Tuesday 7 July...death rate of cases reported, 4.7%; tests performed to cases reported 8.05%
