Why does football get so much more attention nationally than basketball?

Other than QB basketball takes so much more skill and coordination, it’s way more free flowing, there is a ton more action.... so why is football so much more popular?

I have 2 theories

1. Since your favorite football team only plays once a week and only 12-18 times a year the games are a bigger deal and mean more

2. Most people weren’t skilled enough to play high school basketball but since a high school football team needs like 20 people to be competitive almost anyone who weighs over 100lbs can make the team

Just curios really. I’m guilty of it too, I like basketball way more than football but follow LSU football closer than any other team

This dumb. Basketball is the most casually played sport there is.

True, but high school programs only have 20-25 players in it total (including JV and freshman teams). Football programs have double or even triple that, plus you have 22 possible starting spots as opposed to 5 in basketball. Also many football positions don’t really require skill just athleticism or size

almost every child that played sports growing up had a basketball goal or one easily accessible to them. It also doesn't require anyone else to go out and shoot. You can't go play football by yourself. Way more people play basketball recreationally than they do football. Hell, even the kids that aren't good enough to play on the high school basketball team will still play with their friends. There aren't nearly as many people playing pickup football games.

Football is more popular, IMO, because of the violent nature of the sport and the super humans that play professionally. People have always gravitated towards violent competition dating back thousands of years. We're all savages at our core

Just like jazz takes way more musicianship than rock but people just wanna rock. That and the 3 point line has killed basketball.

College ball product is terrible sans the tourney, which oddly is arguably the greatest sporting event

NBA product is terrible as a whole bc of primadonna superstars among many things

very true. It's not like basketball has exploded in popularity since its introduction or anything

#1 is absolutely true, but not the full reason. Football is simply a superior sport when the referees don't suck and take the game into their hands. Scoring is harder, the hits are harder, it's super complex at so many levels, and there's some degree of parity, so it's interesting each season.

Basketball was gaining in popularity for years, then the Warriors and Cavs happened. Ruined it for a bunch of people.

Football is a much more interesting sport. Tons more variety and strategy in terms of situations, formations, play calling, scoring, clock management, coaching decisions, etc.

Basketball is extremely repetitive. Nobody remembers a single shot in any basketball game ever played outside of the final few minutes.

There is literally no sound argument for your assertion.

For me, it's because football emphasizes team and basketball (particularly the NBA) emphasizes individual. A lot of NBA fans are cleat chasers.

It's an expression. A lot of NBA fans are fans of players, not teams.
