quote:

In an about face, Gov. John Bel Edwards' office Thursday proposed a pay raise of about $500 for teachers, less than two weeks after the governor's initial spending plan excluded any such hike and triggered widespread criticism.

quote:

Why Edwards suddenly changed his stance on how to boost teacher pay is unclear.

quote:

Edwards successfully pushed a $1,000 teacher pay raise through the Legislature last year.

Many of the state's roughly 47,000 teachers believed that similar or bigger hikes would take place yearly, and with the governor's support.

quote:

Aides to the governor said at the time that local educators could use some of the money to boost teacher pay.

Teachers and others others then accused the governor of breaking his promise to educators.

$500 a year is a whole 25 cents an hour assuming a standard 40 hour work week.

For teachers though, who apparently work 96 hours or so per week, that's only 10 cents per hour. A slap in the face.

He promised $2000. It was a scam all along.

The idiots at LAE are claiming victory though. It’s fricking pathetic

Teachers are stupid. They do whatever the unions and the Democrats tell them to do. They are overpaid semi-professional parttime workers.

So I too think it sounds measly and ridiculous.
But what else is crazy is that $500 will cost the state $40m. The $1000 he promised would have cost $80m. That a ton of money. Maybe not in the grand scheme of things but good lord.

Also, local districts should better prioritize how they spend their own money from local property taxes to better pay their teachers. It shouldn’t be the state’s responsibility to bump them up to acceptable levels.

This is golden.

I love this line:

Only if you are dullard or a political hack of a newspaper defending JBE.

Which they did on Feb 18th:
Our Opinion: It should be parishes, not only the state of Louisiana, raising teacher pay

Which is basically the Advocate's apologia for JBE's turnabout on his decision to screw over teachers.

Now that he has crawfished, will they call him out for not empowering parishes like their editorial calls for?

Don't hold your breath...

JBE's goal the whole time was to get Louisiana's teachers to the southern regional average in salary. We aren't that far off now.

In 2017-18, the regional average was $52,178 and Louisiana's average was $50,359. Those numbers are a little old and the regional average has grown a bit, but we are definitely close now if you consider $1,500 in direct increases plus the increased funding to the school districts themselves.
