Your grandpa is a smart man. I’d take it one step further and ask “if god has no control over things that happen on earth, then why call it a god”.
Or the far more frightening thought. There is a god but it’s malevolent.

Good on him. Now, I must say that I don’t like the style of writing used by our current yutes. The lack of capitalization and punctuation, terrible sentence structure, and huge run on sentences just make their texts hard to read.
