The first presidential election I was eligible to vote. Proudly pulled the lever for Ronaldus Magnus.

I don't recall the actual poll numbers throughout the campaign but I know they took a dip for Mondale after he promised "If I'm elected I'll raise taxes."
After that Dem candidates just said 'We need to make investments for our future.'

I was in college (Geaux Tigers) at the time. My recall is the national media spent a great deal of time cooing over Mondale's choice of a female running mate, Geraldine Ferraro.
Lots of story narratives with underlying theme of women would (translate should) vote for the ticket 'cause...

As a parting shot at media past, I think the Reveille was more unbearable and unreadable then than now.

I was in my first year in the Air Force and loved having Ronald Reagan as my Commander in Chief.

Times were so very different as there was no social media, cell phone and people generally were much more civil with each other. There was also a lot more patriotism in America and the USA was the good guys and the Ruskies with the bad guys.

My biggest memory was how Reagan destroyed Mondale with this one moment in the debates:

Media thought Mondale had a chance. Reagan had faltered in the first debate and the media pounced on it and drive his age into the ground.

They were genuinely shocked at the arse-whipping that happened that night because they were sure the American people were listening to their sage wisdom.

They were more realistic in 1988 because Dukakis wasn't beating anyone and the 87 market crash was a distant memory (and the S & L crisis hadn't really hit hard outside of the southwest and the tax law changes as to commercial real estate had not fully hit either).

For 1992, the media decided that they were going to do all they could to actively get the Dem nominee elected by propping him up, ignoring the controversies around him and his wife, and painting Bush as an effete, out of touch elitist.

In the lead up to November of that year, did the media act as if they thought Mondale had a real chance?

As late as March/April they were talking as though Mondale was winning (comfortably). They pushed it as a "close" race well into the Summer. They never publicly admitted the landslide until it happened.

Very, very similar to the way 2016 was reported (although the result was a different degree, of course, I'm just talking about the way the reporting was transparently pushing against facts).

Hell, that's how long I haven't trusted the media "polls" because they manufacture them to say anything they want it to say.

92 went to Clinton because of Ross Perot. But the media took advantage and propped up Perot as a viable candidate. If you recall, they really did not like Clinton in '92 because as a Southern governor, he wasn't liberal enough. I mean they grew to like him, but the media pushed Perot hard while painting Bush as a monster.

It would be really interesting to see a time lapse of the county by county voting for every presidential election since 1952 - any idea where to find or anyone want some upvotes to figure it out?

Dang... the bluest county in the entire country in a Reagan-Mondale election is in South Dakota?

The counties surrounding Oglala Lakota County are predominantly Republican, but, like most Native American counties, Oglala Lakota is heavily Democratic, giving over 75 percent of the vote to every Democratic presidential nominee in every election back to 1984, making it one of the most Democratic counties in the United States. No Republican has carried the county in a presidential election since 1952. In 2012, Oglala Lakota County (then known as Shannon) was the county with the highest percentage of vote for Barack Obama in the United States.[23]

Under 5% white.

It's entirely within a reservation.

The only time I can remember the media acting as if a loss was a foregone conclusion was 1996. Mondale was a sacrificial lamb and pretty much everyone knew.

Interestingly this election looks to be shaping up to be a mirror-image of the 1996 election (but with the parties swapped).

Just FYI... EVERYTHING is on the internet

YouTube - NBC 1984 Election Night Coverage

at 19:24 in the video... the broadcast goes to commercial break at 7:22 PM central time with Reagan at ~253 electoral votes... when they restart the video after that commercial break... it's 9:00 PM central time and Reagan already has > 400 electoral college votes

also... in 1984... NBC had GOP in blue and Dem in red... and this is the night that gave us Senator Mitch McConnell (with his win being called the BIG UPSET of the evening in the broadcast)... as well as the night that gave us Senator John Kerry... both were elected to their 1st terms on this night in 1984

Because of that, and the apparent change somewhere along the line, for the longest time I wasn't sure which side someone was talking about when they said red or blue.

How big was the '84 Reagan landslide?

Louisiana & Arkansas polls were still open when he passed 270 (as were some in the NE & Midwest)

I did leave out Perot - stupidly.

I disagree to a point. Sure, they saw him as a spoiler, but they also had to keep him there once it was looking like he might actually win. That's why they pounced on the "you people" line at the NACCP speech and hammered it into the ground. They also equivocated on their coverage of why he dropped out (the conspiracy theories about Bush and his daughter's wedding). They merely suggested he was looney, but they didn't go all "Burisma debunked" on him.
