Only because of Dave. When Dave got here we had more scholly kickers than scholly linebackers.
Lol, no we didnt. 13 linebackers and you also have guys like bowers and key that were listed as dlinemen but really are linebackers in a 3-4.
I mean come on. He had arden key, devin white, duke riley, divinity jr, beckwith. Saying he didnt have talent there is a down right lie. He didnt recruit any of those guys.

the time Les left, QB, WR, OL & LB were so far below old standards that it left O with quite the chore
Was it though? All those positions had contributors that were recruited under Les. Dont forget Brennan originally committed to Les.

Lets look at 2017 depth at each:
QB: Etling, McMillan, Narcisse, Brennan. - Behind Etling were 2 freshman and McMillan who transferred to Tulane which was a place that was more appropriate for his talent level. Narcisse left and didn't really pan out. Brennan gets his shot this year but it was clear that he was not ready in 2017 or 2018. WHo knows how he'd have done in 2019 if we don't get Burrow.
WR: Chark, Gage, Dillon, Anderson, Sullivan, Davis, and Jefferson. - Russell Gage was a great person and an amazing STer but should never have started at WR on an LSU team. Chark was obviously good. Jefferson was the only person on the list that would truly pan out. The other 4 all were beat out by guys recruited after them so...
OL: Listing all the players would be exhausting but lets just know that Charles and Ingram both started at true freshman so the depth here was laughable.
Inside LB: DW was a beast but the other ILB was Alexander who was invisible at best. Behind them were 3 true freshman in Queen, Taylor, and Phillips. So not a lot of depth there.
Outside Lber: We had Key but he didn't play for a while which forced Chaisson to play as a true freshman at the buck so... no depth there. Divinity and Thorton battled for the F Lber spot but that position barely plays so I don't really consider it a starter.
Yeah... there were depth issues in all of these spots.

The 2107 lb corps featured Donnie Alexander who sucked & Corey Thompson who they moved from safety
Thompson was fine but those guys were starters. Imagine what the depth looked like? (Mostly freshmen)
Recruiting at a place like LSU is not about having good players every 3 years. It’s about having studs in the pipeline when good players move on, and they didn’t have that at those positions.
Consider at WR, Trey Quinn, Diarse & Tyrion Johnson all transfered out and had very solid careers. Jazz Ferguson wasn’t far behind them

Na lester, we had depth everywhere....enough to compete with Bama!!!
Dunno why some of you are arguing, look at the depth chart, look at the hit ratios. Having a bunch of incoming freshman is not depth.
And Dave aranda was the one that made the comment about more scholly kickers than linebackers. Guess he is just a dumbass too huh?

This freakin guy. Went from freshman SEC All-American to southeastern lion to undrafted and playing arena ball. Could’ve been a first rounder had he not been a dumbass.

LBs in 2017:
Corey Thompson 6th yr SR
Devin Voorihes SR
Donnie Alexander SR
Arden Key Jr
Devin White Soph
Michael Divinity Soph
Sci Martin Soph
Chaission Fr
Phillips Fr
Queen Fr
Taylor Fr
Thornton Fr
Anthony Fr
So you had only 1 Jr LB on the team. That is insane. 2 of the 3 SRs are garbage. One is a converted safety.
But still as good as White and Divinity were, they were the only 2 Soph that remained in the pipeline after that year.
Thats just poor roster building.

So 6 NFL linebackers? Maybe more? No depth?
Signed 3 in 2017 to build depth - solid!

What really happened was Alabama went on a recruiting run that is unprecedented and LSU didn't /couldn't keep up. These classes were solid, but not good enough to beat Alabama.
Posted on 2/3/20 at 3:54 pm to madhatterman
you missed the point, Les
Posted on 2/3/20 at 3:56 pm to Lester Earl
So how many of those linebackers are playing or will play in the NFL. What is the number that implies proper positional depth?
Posted on 2/3/20 at 4:04 pm to madhatterman
It's not about the numbers, it about recruiting great players every year so that there aren't gaps in talent like shown above
Those SR sucked
Arden Key left after 2017.
Sci Martin transferred.
A lot of those freshmen turned into good players, but then all being in one class is troublesome.

Any depth issues after this year? Again - how many professional players are needed to imply positional depth? I'll take White, Divinity, Philips, Queen and Chaison whith no complaints. What college team had more depth at linebacker?- I'll answer for you - Alabama.

Just unacceptable to finish with a 34-16 over 4 years at LSU.

I can't tell if you are dumb or you are just missing the point.
In 2017 all those players other than DW and Divinity were freshman. Divinity was not a very good player in 2017 which is why he rarely saw the field. To rely on freshman as your depth is not good. Sure there are exceptions like Stingley but most freshman need to develop. This includes every single one of those LBers not named DW. These guys aren't the 2019 versions of themselves, they were all raw as hell.

Now the 2017 is gonna be at or near the top
And 2018 is going to be in the below 3.0 range. Then it comes back up. I’ll bet that 2019 and 2020 are going to be in the same range as 2017.

And while Miles knob slobberers can never admit it, recruits had figured him out. And, he was having to reach.
This is the truth. Miles was a lazy recruiter compared to Saban and Orgeron. And he atrted reaching for highly rated guys who were personality problems. Some panned out, like Frank Heron, and others didn’t like Tre Valentine.

Look no further than the lazy fat frick that signed with Alabama over LSU last year at this time.

College football has a 3 or 4 year rotation. LB depth was getting low so LSU signed 3 future NFL lb's in 2017. This is pretty simple. If they had depth at LB they would have focussed on other positions. Job well done - evidence = National Championship and NFL paychecks. But stick to your guns regardless of contrary information.
