The Delta is a strange mistress. She can be sexy and exciting and full of joy. But on cold rainy days in the depth of winter, she feels ominous and depressing.

Most of the guys I know from the Delta have issues too many women, too much booze, too much cocaine, too much time and money on their hands. Seems to be a tough combination.

Sorry for you and your friends. Go do something to make yourself feel better.

Maybe it’s because I’m not from there, but to me, the Delta is depressing as shite. I feel like I’m stuck in the 1930s when I’m there.

You can include me in this. As well as my friend. Not sure what caused his death, not hearing suicide. Maybe heart attack. He loved his cocaine, women and bourbon

That’s a fact. I have friends that I’ll talk to 3-5 times a week during the farming season, and maybe once a month during the offseason, and that’s the reason. I’m not better than them. I went through a stretch where I was drinking too much during the winter for a couple years, but I recognized it and I just try to get away from it during idle time. Getting married and having someone there every night helps too.

During the day, I spend more time in the office now, but that gets monotonous. If I don’t have a meeting, I try to get out of the Delta on those depressing weekdays. One good thing I found is there’s usually a fair amount of good movies out this time of year... I’ll go to Oxford or Memphis or Madison/Ridgeland and just eat a good lunch and catch a movie by myself.
