Dale Earnhardt

I’m an older poster and have literally seen them come and go.
Elvis and Princess Di easily dwarf Kobe. Kobe will be primarily mourned in the sports world. Elvis (43 years ago) and Di (23 years ago) were global. MJ and RWilliams were also huge along with John Lennon. Their deaths impact us still.
In sports, Earnhardt and Roberto Clemente were huge.

With Kobe though..he wasnt really living a drug accompanied lifestyle. Wasnt an odd guy, and wasnt old at all, etc.
With Jackson, he always seemed off. Had it been in the mid or late 1990s and MJ would have been way more shocking.
Especially in the late 80s.

Jackson is the on the same level in terms of celebrity but his life was such a disaster at the end that while it was sudden, people weren’t super surprised.
Kobe is shocking because of his age and how it happened.

born and raised in LA-
In Los Angeles, this might be bigger than Michael Jackson.
I think a good comparison is Princess Di. Similar age, leaves behind kids, transportation accident. Pure tragedy of a beloved figure.
Agree with some others that Jackson’s death is different because he was a kiddie rapist drug addict and not everyone was heartbroken over it.

Not everyone was sad or shocked when MJ died. Plenty of people said good riddance.

Has to be Elvis.
ETA: I believe that the death of Elvis was so much a greater a loss for people to grasp than the death of Kobe. I don't believe it's even comparable.

My mom loved Motown music and I knew every Marvin Gaye song and could sing a long to them when his dad shot and killed him in 84. I was 14 and I recall that hitting me real hard but don’t really remember how it affected others. Different time. No Twitter or message boards. I was 7 when Elvis died and I remember the adults in my life were very sad about it. My mom broke down and cried for a while. I didn’t understand but I cried too because she was so sad and I felt like somebody very close to us had died.
MJ shocked me and I was very sad. We were on the beach in Destin when the news broke. Might have been different if it was just me and my wife and kids but we were with 2 of my best friends since middle school and their families. We talked about how he turned into a freak and all that but the memories made to his music since the early 80s for us just got me in the feels. I remember videos across the world of people holding vigils and anguish in so many faces of different nationalities.
Kobe was an awesome player and great ambassador for the game. I see shock and disbelief but don’t think we will see the type of vigils and real anguish from the public like with a generational musician. Seems like we choose to celebrate and honor generational athletes passing more than mourn and despair their passing. Musicians just touch us more emotionally and philosophically. Athletes tend to make us wonder at the amazing upper limits of human physical capabilities. Just don’t really feel like we lost a chunk of our own self when an athlete dies as much as we do a generational musician.

feels the most like MJ in my lifetime as an adult, about to turn 39.

This is the worst I can remember. It doesn’t help that his daughter and others were with him going to her basketball game.

MJ was certainly the biggest celebrity to die suddenly; bigger than kobe, prince, diana, etc.

Steve Irwin isn’t in the same building as them though.
