Do we have any body that hunts southern AL? Just got a great spot out here. First class lodge and amazing lakes. It hasn’t been hunted in a few years, but it’s set up unlike any place I’ve hunted before. Beautiful hardwood thickets and pine thickets, with a few food plots carved out. Food plots were planted preseason and no one hunted it all season until now.

Question is, how is the deer hunting typically in southern AL? Large population? Around Barbour/Dale County. This place looks like a deer haven, amazing habitat, and fully surrounded by an abundance of woods. Plenty of food too, but I’m not seeing the deer. I saw a shooter buck on my first sit Wednesday morning and only the arse end of one other since then. Making long hunts with lots of are too see, but just not seeing deer.

If it's anything like my neck of the woods in central AL the deer avoid food plots an idyllic woodland settings and instead gather in large hoards near your house on the side of the road for you to see every day on your way home any time you drive after dark.

I remember Jackie Bushman saying he barely hunts Alabama until after the first of the year

We spent a bunch of money on a place to take several of our customers one year in South Central Bama. Beautiful spot. Looked like there were deer on 9” centers. It was a 4 day/8 hunt deal. After 6 hunts not a single person out of like 10 had seen a deer. We packed up and left lol

When I was growing up we had about 60 acres in that area. Our gate actually formed part of the line between Barbour and Dale county. The surrounding property was all in the family as well, but we typically stuck to our little tract. There were always big deer in there

Hunt the rut, you will see deer . Our deer go nocturnal after the rut.

What stand set ups are you hunting? What strategy?

I assume you are hunting the rut. My strategy would be to hunt high visibility areas in the morning, such as untility right of ways. In the afternoon, I’d be hunting food plots.

We hunt near Evergreen. The rut is on now and through the first week of February. The nice bucks usually don't show up till mid January. My advice would be to get that easy doe or two early and take a break till January. We always have a lot of nocturnal movement during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Get off the food plots and hunt transitions of pine/hardwoods or creeks. The population is good however the average doe size is smaller than LA/MS. What city are you in?

I am in Pickens county now, but Barbour county has a decent population , but I also think there are about 5 different rut dates in Barbour County so there's that to deal with.

Your best luck will probably be in Oct when the acorns fall. AL deer will hide in thickets after that. If you can get between a thicket and water source, you will have some luck.
