LINK

I agree 100% with the author.

This is on the front page of the "Review" section of today's paper. The link may be a pay wall. I can't copy the entire article and post it because is too long.

LINK

The second link may bypass the pay wall.

All the major publications have cowardly removed comments sections from their articles. There is a bunch of retarded statements in this article, despite the overall premise being mostly correct

President Jefferson, the Ottoman Empire is causing trouble off the Barbary Coast. Shall we deploy the Marines?

From the halls of Montezuma
To the shores of Tripoli

Defending American interests abroad, brought to you by the author of the Declaration.

What interests are we defending, currently, in Afghanistan?

Fair point.

I would have no objection to the US deploying an identical number of active duty servicemen to the region as we did to resolve that conflict, but not one soldier more.

First Barbary War

quote:

The turning point in the war was the Battle of Derna (April–May 1805). Ex-consul William Eaton, a former Army captain who used the title of "general", and US Marine Corps 1st Lieutenant Presley O'Bannon led a force of eight U.S. Marines and five hundred mercenaries—Greeks from Crete, Arabs, and Berbers on a march across the desert from Alexandria, Egypt, to capture the Tripolitan city of Derna. This was the first time the United States flag was raised in victory on foreign soil. The action is memorialized in a line of the Marines' Hymn—"the shores of Tripoli".The capturing of the city gave American negotiators leverage in securing the return of hostages and the end of the war.

Your quote excludes the sailors and Marines on the most-powerful flotilla operating in the Med at the time, including ALL three of our largest capital ships.

None of whom apparently set foot on the shores of Tripoli.

Because if we pull out (like Obama did in Iraq) an extremist American/west hating group with resources pulls in and eventually brings that shite to the homeland (see 9/11).

The people that think we won't pay a price for departing that hell hole are naive as frick.

China and Russia would have no problem rolling up in there throwing shite around and controlling the territory for military and economic advancement.

Isolationist USA gives a lot of bad people a pass.

Bunch of crap in that quote.

Define "bad" people.

Why would anyone that has read anything on the history of the region think that either China or Russia would want to "control" the territory or be capable of controlling the "territory?

And then the US loses out on a lot of economic protections they have across the world. The military isn't just there to plant American flags.

And our enemies organize themselves into dominance while the US remains in their cave blind to everything going on.
