re: Amazon's LOTRs cast announced

In Tolkien’s work, and especially in The Silmarillion, men were mostly referred to collectively as Men without reference to their race. However, in LotR it was at least implied, if not openly stated, that the men from the South who fought with Sauron were black, so other races beyond white do exist in that world. I have no problem with them casting blacks or whoever else in this show as long as they do it in a way that makes sense. A multicultural Numenor would not jive with the source material, for instance.

I don't know any of those names. I'm sure they'll be great.

People traveled between Numenor and Middle Earth for 2700 years.

You can literally tell from their headshots who will be playing Elves, Hobbits, and Dwarves

I like the cast.
They already look like hobbits and elves

Judging by picture posted..they look mostly European.

Agreed, but Numenor was not the sort of place where you could just move in and become a Numenorean. That’s the point I’m trying to make. Race and country are not separate things in Middle Earth. Being set as it is in the rough equivalent of the Dark Ages, tribalism is the main mode of identifying oneself.

You are correct! Most people, and clearly anyone that down votes you, haven't read the source material and have only watched the movies. There are people commenting in this thread talking about Hobbits LOL!! Show is base on Second Age, no Hobbits. So they have no idea what they are talking about, but they are experts on what the actors should look like.
Now if they wanna talk to me about how Netflix screwed up casting choices for the Witcher we can have that discussion.

Assuming the blacks are the orcs
You joke, but all of the Maori actors in the original trilogy were orcs

Tolkien was very specific in his description of the races of Middle Earth.

I found a pretty interesting write up about Hobbit origins. Tolkien never gave us a true origin. Only that they were first discovered at the beginning of the Third Age.

I’m hoping since it’s in the second age we get a younger Gandalf, Saruman and Elrond
Gandalf and Saruman didn't come to Middle-Earth until 1,000 Third Age.
I would assume a younger Elrond will be used.

Morfydd Clark (2nd row - far right on 1st page pic) will be a younger Galadriel

In comparison, the entire GOT series takes place in like 2-3 years (I think)
Depends on the season. Time travel and teleportation really messed up the timeline.

That's what struck me as well, most of those people are very ugly. I miss the old days when you had to be physically attractive to be an actor or actress.

He was rather blunt about it. Which is fine.
When you look at one of his world maps you see that the area in which the LoTR took place is actually not amazingly large. There is quite a bit more world going on, including, I would imagine, some continents he never got around to making.
Given a small geographic setting you will likely have a mostly homogeneous "look". Taking away the Orcs everyone has a mostly Anglo-Northern European look. Which is fine because most everyone in the LoTR are descendants of people who fled the Northern reaches of the world after the war against Morgoth.
That having been said... Tolkien talks about the Haradrim and has detailed some of their history. They are, to be honest, quite dark of skin. Ranging from Middle Eastern to full on African.
It should also be noted, while the Haradrim were allied with Sauron they had damn good reason to go war with Gondor. Historically the Gondorians periodically invaded and looted the Haradrim. The Haradrim, not surprisingly, returned the favor whenever they could.
A story set in the second age could easily have some Haradrim living in the North or coming into conflict with Gondor and Arnor.

Hmmm, Second Age, Numenor etc...
Top row, last on right- black guy. Someone said Sauron/Annatar (Sauron's "beautiful" visage). Could be right.
Middle row, last on right- I could see that as Galadriel.
Some of the uglier dudes could be Dwarves, remember Moria is in play along with Eregion.
Elves- probably gonna have Celebrimbor, Gil-Galad, Cirdan, Elrond.
Center guy strikes me as either Ar-Pharazon or Celebrimbor... as does the guy on the top row, left.

I'll bet my dick they'll throw some hobbits in this shite though. You'll see.
You know they've already "focused grouped" this stuff. People want their frickin' hobbits man. To the movie schmucks like me, lord of the rings without midgets ain't gonna fly.
You're getting hobbits and that's just the way it is. It's what the people want.

It may be what people want but The Tolkien Estate has already hard coded being true to the canon established in the books in the contractual rights written up with Amazon. So want it or not if the Tolkien estate deems that Hobbits did not arrive until the 3rd age, that will be the end of that discussion.
There is room for literary license in the details of the story. Amazon just cannot add or change something in the story that contradicts what already exists in the books.
