Amazon's Lord of the Rings prequel series has announced its core cast in a Twitter thread on the show's official account - though not which roles each actor will portray.

Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Tom Budge, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, and Daniel Weyman were all confirmed as starring in the series, which begins production next month.

“After undertaking an extensive global search, we are delighted finally to reveal the first group of brilliant performers who will take part in Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series,” said series showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay in the announcment. “These exceptionally talented women and men are more than just our actors: they are the newest members of an ever-expanding creative family that is now working tirelessly to bring Middle-earth to life anew for fans and audiences worldwide.”

The plot and synopsis of the show remain secret, though the show's Twitter account has indicated it will take place in the "Second Age" of Middle Earth - the time in which Sauron forged the rings of power from which the fantasy saga draws its name, and which precedes the era depicted in the Lord of the Rings films.

No premiere date for The Lord of the Rings on Amazon Prime has been announced

Uh oh. A lot of non-Northern-European names in there.

Prepare yourselves.

I’m hoping since it’s in the second age we get a younger Gandalf, Saruman and Elrond

Though if I had to guess they’ll make up new characters instead of using characters like that or characters like Isildur. I see they replaced Will Poulter with Robert Aramayo. Aramayo played young Ned Stark. He looks much more like a lead than Poulter. Poulter is a weird looking cat

I think I've read that they are doing the downfall of Númenor. If so, then you're likely to get Sauron, Ar-Pharazôn, Elendil, Isildur, Anárion, etc.

Also, I don't think any of the wizards were sent to middle-earth until the 3rd Age, so we likely won't get Gandalf unless they change some things.

Why so many ugly dudes? No more stallions trying to act these days?

That's what struck me as well, most of those people are very ugly. I miss the old days when you had to be physically attractive to be an actor or actress.

Mixed guy on the top right will probably Sauron's human form during the second age before the fall.

Wasn't he supposed to be some kind of piercing, beautiful deceiver. That guy's eyes alone make him have that kind of deceiving look.

Semi serious answer, modern art is almost always a rejection of beauty, and we’ve seen a shift away from beauty in popular culture that mirrors that.

Architecture is also another sore spot.

You know, you can look at those photos and tell which one's will be hobbits and which ones will be elves.

Now look, I'm not trying to be dicky here but I have a question and it's an honest one, so just preemptively settle down.

The black actors. What/who will they portray?

I'm not a rings fan beyond the movies. No books, no fan theory stuff or whatever else.

Were there any characters in literature or whatever that would/could be a good fit for black actors?

Two of the women on the bottom row are good looking, that's like 2 out of what 15 people?

There are more people who look legitimately retarded in that photo than attractive.

Photo editing does wonders. It shocks me that anyone would ever believe any photo they see online is natural or unedited. Even 5 year olds with a smart phone and an Instagram account can post edited photos.

Its been a couple of decades since I have read any material on the 2nd Age but I do not think Hobbits arrived until the 3rd Age.
