Mental Illness related to mass shootings seems to be overblown

I've been listening to a lot of John Douglas lately.
A background on John Douglas is that he started and developed the Behavior Science Unit for the FBI. He is also the basis of the show on Netflix, Mindhunters. He's interviewed the sickest POS's on the planet and got to understand what causes them to do what they do.
One thing that he has been saying is that almost all of these people (serial killers) know right from wrong. Very few, are clinically insane. So mental illness that maybe some of them have, is not a cop out.
The only mental illness that has come up that makes someone not know right from wrong is Schizophrenia. There are other circumstances like Andrea Yates for example who was declared insane. But was still diagnosed with some forms of Schizophrenia.
I'm just curious what he thinks of the "mass shooter" and everyone just spits out, mental illness.
Thoughts?

If you wake up one morning and randomly kill 10 strangers you are mentally ill.

And that morning, you still know not to do it. You know it's wrong.
And if this were true, none of the mass shooters would go to jail. They all would be let off because they were mentally ill.

Mass shooters and serial killers are two totally different animals.

Totally agree and some people don't see a distinction... serial killers are basically all sociopaths... mass shooters are basically all mentally ill.
You can make an argument that a sociopath is also mentally ill, but it is much more akin to having a genetic defect that creates an entire lack of normal human emotion and empathy.

1) You're confusing a serial killer, who gets victims one at a time usually, vs a mass shooter, who usually gets multiple victims at a time.
2) Mass shootings include anything from drive-bys to schools depending on if it meets the required amount of potential victims. So yes there are a lot of nonmentally diseased criminals over and above the number of mentally diseased criminals.

Some forms of mental illness do not fit the legal definition of insanity. PTSD is a form of mental illness. Sociopaths are mentally ill. Neither condition qualifies as a legal defense on their own.

These people aren't serial killers. They're mass murderers. There's a difference.

Premise is flawed.

It's more of a personality disorder

we also have similar measurable rates of mental illness to other countries, all of which have much less mass violence. The answer has to be something else.

Not to sound like a "crazy conspiracy theorist", but I've often thought that perhaps these people are being either blackmailed or brainwashed/programmed to carry these attacks out.
Who stands to benefit from such a dastardly thing? Politicians who are looking for an excuse to remove our 2nd amendment right to bear arms (the very "right" we have granted that explicitly threatens them with death should they not do their fricking jobs).

Cultcha and millions of guns in circulation.

If you know right from wrong, and choose to murder multiple strangers with no remorse, then something is broken in you.

There are more mental illnesses than just not knowing right from wrong.

I don't think mental illness is the catch-all we'd like it to be.
Some people are just evil.
Some people are just evil.

There is much more poverty and less access to weapons in other countries, as well as less personal isolation and media influence. An inactive mind creates fantasies to make their life more exciting.

I wish I could have put like a sarcasm tag in the post somehow.
Oh yeah, I did. I put it in quotations.

Mental illness isn't the cause of most mass shootings. Most seems to come from extreme frustration about some situation to the point of near suicidality coupled with easy access to firearms and ammo. It's a volatile mix. Violence by true schizophrenics is very rare.

You think the guy who shot up the church service wasn’t mentally ill? What about the guy from Christchurch? I mean come on.
