I don't think LSU will sign 25 in Feb

Adams, Crawford, CamRon, Lorando are some of the few 4* still out there. All with some academic questions.

One or two may get the Parker treatment (sign at the last minute in Feb).

Some of the others they can wait on academically until the summer like they did with Jefferson. Also allows them to see what grad transfers become available after spring practice.

I like this plan.

I don't like the taking of random 3*s at the end of the cycle because we have space. Just get more for next year.

I agree on space fillers. But if they're lottery tickets like the 25th guy last year, I'm okay with it.

None of the guys we are looking at are “random 3 stars.” All of these will be 4s except for the WR who’s now visiting, and he’s only a 3 because of grades. These guys are all better than your typical fallback guys if they can get their school work handled.

Yeah, that has turned out so poorly at LSU, guys like Foster Moreau, Duke Riley, Lloyd Cushenberry, and Justin Jefferson were just space fillers.

I wouldn't really call those guys "random". When he said random, I was thinking more along the lines of out of state guys who pop up near the end of the cycle. Guys like Fonua and Little from last year would be examples of "random" 3*s. In my mind, anyway.

The guys you mentioned were pretty well known in state guys who we had recruited for a while and, while they didn't have offers until late, they were pretty well known commodities.

BTW, I'm by no means writing Fonua and Little off. I'm just saying I consider them to be examples of "random" 3*s taken at the end to fill the class.

All of those guys were the "last guy in" after LSU missed on higher prospects.

I agree. I just don't think they were random. They were guys we would have liked to take but just didn't have room until the end.

And for Jefferson, we would have signed him in February if his grades had been in order.

We have 19 right now. McGlothern, McKinnley Jackson, Crawford, RB, WR, CamRon Jackson are takes. Then you have Kaufman that LSU is on the fence with. If we signed all 7, we would be at 26. We won't sign them all. Do we miss on Jackson? Offer Kaufman? Others not make the grades?
It is too early to say right now but I like the idea of holding one scholarship. You don't know who will appear in the portal and you need to be in position to act if the right person is there. The good part is you don't lose the scholarship if you take someone. It can still be used in 2021.
The portal has changed recruiting and we need to be prepared to play that game. I would never limit myself by not having a spot open.

I guarantee you that the coaches will not sign guys they think won't contribute within the next couple of years.

Do you think when they signed Desmond Little they thought he would contribute in a couple of years?

Yes. Bama thought he was worth an offer.

I'm not saying he wasn't worth an offer. Just that I don't think the staff signed him with the intention of him being much a contributor in a couple of years

Nah. You're probably right. They signed him thinking he would do nothing but sit the bench for 3 years.

We are less than a month away from signing day.
In the next 2 weeks we should start seeing smoke

I don’t agree. You always have attrition for different reasons throughout. They shouldn’t offer someone they really don’t think can play, but best to take a chance than save spots you likely won’t need.

Agree about keeping a spot open. You never know how things turn out. Say Brennan has an accident or an injury in the spring and is out for the year. Better believe we will be looking for qb’s in the transfer portal.

So you think "a couple" means he's not going to contribute until year 4? A couple is 2. You said they're going to sign a guy who can contribute in a couple of year. No, I don't think they signed Little with the expectation that he will contribute next year. By the accounts he was a pretty big project.

I do. I made that clear I thought. I don't think SEC coaches can afford to use a scholly on a guy who will for sure take 3 years to play a down.

Jefferson is the only one who would be tough to replace given his production this year.
