I’ve been doing some research on Clemsons offense for a video I’m working on (shameless plug- Clemson defensive study link below) and I wandered upon opponent 3rd down conversion rate, and to my surprise LSU was 9th in the country at opponent conversion rate, at like 30%.

I for one sort of bought into the whole 3rd and Aranda thing, and was surprised to find out that we are pretty damn good defensively on 3rd down.

Here’s the Clemson D video if you want to check it out:

LSU's defense was never bad, we had issues.

Realistically we underperformed, and when we made mistakes we made big mistakes.

but most teams were not having long sustained drives on us.

Yea one i read or heard the other day not sure if correct or accurate but was that LSU was second in the sec in sacks... In my mind this just wasn't the case.....

I remember a ton of 3rd and long conversions, but in reality is was probably never as bad as it felt. This is going to be such a great matchup.

I have been fighting against this same echo chamber bullshite all evening. LSU held both OU and UGA to 5-13 and 3-13 respectively meanwhile the "well balanced" Clemson defense we have been force fed all year allowed Juggernaut Virginia to go 10-18 and OSU with a hobbled QB and RB went 7-18.

Not the suffocating Iron Curtain we were led to believe now is it? Still a talanted unit, but human after all.

My son said the same thing when I showed him the numbers, then as we discussed it he was just hung up on 2 plays vs Bama and 1 or 2 vs UT that created the illusion in his mind.

Its "End-of-half Aranda". And he seems to have fixed that.

It’s 4th and Aranda and it’s real. He does a great job at stoping on 3rd down, but when teams decide to go for it on 4th, he blows the play call. LSU is 53rd in the nation for 4th conversion upon us with 15 conversions out of 31 which isn’t terrible, but those 15 are from actual opponents when the time mattered and we needed a stop.

How many of those made fourth downs resulted in a win for the opposing team this year?

3rd and Chavis WAS a real thing.
3rd and Aranda was a thing until the Ole Miss game,
when Coach O, the ranking committee and the fans reacted.

Aranda then got active and played D on the second half as well, rather than relying on the lead generated by the O.

I stumbled across that a few weeks ago and was surprised. I really think after scoring defense, 3rd down D is most important...and we've been very good there.

I think you’ll find that we are one of the best at causing 3 and outs.

I've been posting some stats here and there. 1 important one -
fei has lsu at 18th in defensive opponent adjustment. clemson - 59th.

Both fei and fpi have LSU's d in the top 15. So the 2 defenses are statistically similar over an entire season and lsu has been facing tougher competition.

The more I look at the stats, the more I'm convinced that LSU's d fares better than Clemson's especially given how aranda's crew has played the last 4 games
