Why are refs not mic’d up to talk to each other?

So that when a flag is thrown they don’t all have to run together to discuss, just push a button and have open communication between all the refs so they can determine if there are multiple penalties where they need to place the ball. Just seems like it could speed it up a bit, even if only like 15 seconds faster, it adds up over the length of the game.

And you know every once in a while the head ref would hit the wrong button and start talking through the PA system and it would be funny.

Even when they get together and discuss, they get it wrong. Then it gets reviewed, then it gets changed. Seems like a cruel joke for the viewers.

Too easy for refs to conspire to throw flags.

They are,
But it is better to get together and talk, especially when u have multiple fouls or fouls with varied enforcement spots and other extenuating issues on a play

They are mic'd up. It's a system called "O 2 O"
They even have direct/constant comms to replay booth
I have had the opportunity to listen in on the comms. Some of the stuff they say to players and each other are

They do.
But when having longer discussions with multiple people, things get stepped on easily obviously.

Seem to recall a "this is getting good" one from the Pats-Falcons superbowl.

Rugby broadcasts the refs, including their discussions of replays, and it is glorious.

Because someone would figure out how to listen in and hear their instructions on when to throw a flag.

They are mic’ d up. But it is sometimes difficult hearing what another official is saying. If you watch closely you might see one of them turning on their communication device and saying something like, “sub, sub, sub” with both arms extended for an offensive substitution; “short, short, short” on a play that ends near the line to gain; or “tee, tee, tee” when the offense brings out the FG team. Notice that all of these examples are short, repeated words intended to notify the whole crew. When penalties are involved crew members need to get face to face to discuss what they saw. Pass Interference, intentional grounding, and false start vs offside often need to be confirmed with other officials especially if two flags are thrown. Are the 2 (or more) flags for the same foul or is there more than one foul. And, of course the Referee wants to try and make sure he gets the player’s number right. Remember that there is often a lot of noise in the stadium that makes hearing through an earpiece difficult
